17-year-old, honors student, Antwon Rose was killed during a traffic stop Tuesday when police officers pulled a car he was a passenger in over for what they said was part of investigating a nearby shooting. Rose was fatally shot in the back after he ran away from armed police officers who had taken the driver into custody. Rose was unarmed and running in the opposite direction of police.
So far, the Allegheny County Police Department has not released the name of the East Pittsburgh police officer who fired the fatal shots. According to CBS Pittsburgh, the cop was a rookie who had only been on the force for three weeks and had only been sworn in 90 minutes before he fatally shot Rose. The cop had previously worked for the University of Pittsburgh Police Department.
As of Wednesday, the officer was put on paid leave, and the Allegheny County Homicide Division is investigating the shooting. Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala will determine whether charges will be brought in Rose’s shooting after reviewing the investigation findings.
Activists and community members have expressed outrage over Rose’s death, calling for justice.
