A Different World Sequel: Next Generation of Hillman Legends

Netflix is taking us back to Hillman College, y’all! They just announced a A Different World sequel series, inspired by the iconic ’90s sitcom that shaped Black television. This time, the story centers on the newest Wayne-Gilbert, making her own mark and discovering that legacy is a double-edged sword.

At the heart of it all is Deborah Wayne, played by the amazing Maleah Joi Moon (from Hell’s Kitchen on Broadway!). As the youngest daughter of TV royalty Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert, Deborah is rebellious, free-spirited, and determined all rolled into one. As a Hillman freshman, she’s ready to define herself while living her best life. But stepping out of her parents’ shadow? That’s the real challenge.

Behind the scenes, Netflix is bringing together a powerhouse team, bridging the original series with a fresh, creative vision. Felicia Pride (Grey’s Anatomy, Queen Sugar) will be the Showrunner, Executive Producer, and Writer, bringing her thoughtful storytelling to Hillman’s new class. And, get this, Debbie Allen—who directed 83 episodes of the original—is back as Director and Executive Producer! Allen will direct three episodes, including the premiere, promising a vibe that’s true to the original’s iconic spirit.

The sequel also reunites us with two original creative forces: Reggie Rock Bythewood (Swagger, Shots Fired) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King, Love & Basketball) are returning as Executive Producers, keeping this new chapter connected to the heart and cultural impact of the Hillman we love. They’re joined by Executive Producers Mandy Summers (That ’90s Show) and Tom Werner (The Conners, Roseanne).

Hillman’s newest class is full of exciting young talent ready to take the torch:

Alijah Kai Haggins (Everybody Hates Chris) as Rashida

Cornell Young (Doing Life) as Shaquille

    Kennedi Reece as Hazel

Jordan Aaron Hall (The Idea of You) as Amir

Chibuikem Uche (One Of Us Is Lying) as Kojo

With its 10-episode, single-camera, half-hour format, this sequel promises a modern take on campus life while honoring the vibrant, culturally rich storytelling of the original. Early buzz hints at a series that balances laugh-out-loud moments with heartfelt coming-of-age stories, staying true to A Different World’s legacy of tackling real issues with care and honesty.

A Different World joins a growing comedy lineup at Netflix, alongside hits like Nobody Wants This, The Vince Staples Show, A Man on the Inside, Emily in Paris, and Survival of the Thickest. For both die-hard fans and new viewers, the return to Hillman feels nostalgic and perfectly timed.

Class is officially back in session!
