The R&B world is still reeling from the tragic loss of Grammy-nominated queen, Angie Stone. This year started with some heartbreaking news for her fans and family, and now they’re fighting for justice after the devastating crash that took her life.
According to a wrongful death lawsuit filed in Gwinnett County, the 62-year-old icon was traveling with her bandmates and loved ones in a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van on March 1. They were headed back to Atlanta after blessing the stage in Mobile, Alabama, doing what she loved most.
The lawsuit paints a harrowing picture: the van’s driver allegedly lost control, sending the vehicle veering off I-65 in Montgomery County before it overturned and landed in the left lane. Imagine the chaos and fear as the passengers, including Stone, tried to escape the wreckage.
Then, the unthinkable happened. A CRST tractor-trailer allegedly slammed into the overturned van at nearly 70 mph without even attempting to brake. The impact ejected Angie Stone, pinning her beneath the wreckage. She passed away at the scene. Fellow passenger Sheila Hopkins was also seriously injured in the catastrophe.
Stone’s family attorneys are arguing that this tragedy was entirely preventable, and they’re laying out some serious allegations:
- They claim the truck’s braking system was defective and failed to engage, a dangerous oversight that cost a life.
- The driver was allegedly negligent, distracted by headphones, and in violation of federal trucking regulations.
- Daimler Truck and its safety system maker Detroit Diesel are accused of failing to warn users about defects in the Freightliner Cascadia model.
- The Sprinter van driver is accused of negligence in losing control, and the van’s owner for hiring and training an allegedly uninsured driver.
The lawsuit seeks wrongful death, injury, and punitive damages, along with attorneys’ fees and costs. The family is determined to see justice served and hold those responsible accountable.
The homegoing service for Angie Stone on March 14 at World of Faith Cathedral in Austell, Georgia, was a true testament to her impact. Gospel and R&B royalty showed up to pay their respects. Tyler Perry, Kirk Franklin, Anthony Hamilton, Keke Wyatt, Tamela Mann, and Musiq Soulchild all gathered to honor her remarkable life and career. It was a bittersweet moment, celebrating a legacy while mourning a profound loss.
Her passing has left a huge void in the music world, but her family is determined to ensure that those responsible for her death are held accountable. We’re sending love and strength to her family as they navigate this difficult journey. Her music will live on, but the fight for justice has just begun.
