Celebrities React to Sydney Sweeney Interview Backlash

In a recent interview, Sydney Sweeney addressed the controversy surrounding her American Eagle ad. However, her response didn’t quite land well, sparking disappointment and drawing criticism from some of her peers. The core issue? Sweeney seemed to sidestep a direct question about white supremacy.

A recent Sydney Sweeney interview has sparked backlash

During a GQ interview, Sweeney discussed the American Eagle denim campaign that touted “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” playing on “jeans” and “genes.” For many, joking about the genes of a blonde, blue-eyed white woman felt tone-deaf. While the backlash intensified, some conservative voices surprisingly rallied to Sweeney’s defense.

Interviewer Katherine Stoeffel offered Sweeney a chance to directly address the controversy.

“Is there something that you want to say about the ad itself?” Stoeffel asked. “The criticism of the content was basically that, maybe specifically in this political climate, white people shouldn’t joke about genetic superiority.”

    Sweeney declined to comment directly.

“I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear,” she said.

A number of celebrities have called out Sydney Sweeney after the interview

Her reluctance to disavow white supremacy resonated as an answer in itself for many. Criticism intensified, and even Sweeney’s colleagues weighed in. Aimee Lou Wood, a fellow White Lotus star, commented with a vomiting emoji on a clip from the GQ interview.

Content creator Jupiter Baal didn’t mince words in an Instagram video, stating, “#sidneysweeney isn’t innocent. She is a willing participant on the in joke of #eugenics at a time in which the #farright is thriving on that propaganda.”

Christina Ricci, SZA, and Wood all showed their support by liking the post. Actor Dan Stevens also shared a pointed message on his Instagram account about Sweeney.

“Sydney Sween’s GQ interview is a reminder that ‘not having a stance’ on white supremacy is 100% having a stance on white supremacy,” he wrote.

Amidst the lukewarm reception of Sweeney’s recent film, Christy, Ruby Rose and Jon Stewart didn’t hold back in addressing the situation. Rose, initially cast as lesbian boxer Christy Martin, was particularly vocal.

“None of ‘the people’ want to see someone who hates them, parading around pretending to be us,” Rose wrote on Threads. “You’re a cretin and you ruined the film. Period. Christy deserved better.”

Stewart took a comedic jab at the film’s box office performance on The Daily Show.

“The new Sydney Sweeney movie, box office bupkis,” he said. “Apparently, her new MAGA fan base didn’t show up in droves to see a biopic about a lesbian professional boxer who overcomes domestic violence to live her truth. Who could have seen that coming?”

She recently addressed the low box office success of her latest film

Christy‘s $1.3 million opening in North America marked one of the lowest of all time. Sweeney responded to these disappointing figures in an Instagram post.

“If Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded,” she wrote. “So yes I’m proud. Why? Because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact.”

The film’s critical reception has been mixed.
