HBCU OUTRAGE: FAMU Band Announcer Calls Alabama State’s Honey Beez “The New Face of Ozempic”
The HBCU community is fired up after a halftime incident during Saturday’s face-off between Alabama State University (ASU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU) at Bragg Memorial Stadium.
As Alabama State’s beloved plus-sized dance team, the Honey Beez, strutted off the field after their performance, longtime FAMU band announcer Joe Bullard dropped a comment that many are calling offensive and straight-up body-shaming. Bullard referred to the Honey Beez as “the new face of Ozempic.” Ouch.
The crowd’s reaction? A mix of gasps, boos, and nervous laughter. You know it’s real when social media explodes minutes later with clips of the comment, igniting outrage all over the HBCUverse and beyond. Like, did he really say that?!
The Honey Beez, known nationwide for their confidence, skill, and unapologetic performances with the Mighty Marching Hornets, instantly became the focus. Supporters are blasting Bullard’s words as a low-key attempt to disrespect Black women who have proudly redefined body image on the HBCU stage. And we are here for the Honey Beez always.
Alabama State President Responds
Alabama State President Dr. Quinton T. Ross Jr. didn’t waste a second issuing a powerful statement condemning the incident. Gotta respect that.
“While we recognize the spirit of competition, there is no place for disparaging or demeaning remarks directed at our scholars,” Ross said. Preach!
He revealed that he had already chopped it up with both FAMU’s president and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) commissioner, who were on the same page with his stance.
Ross also showed love to the Honey Beez and the Mighty Marching Hornets, emphasizing the countless hours of grind they put in to create “unforgettable” and “show-stopping” moments. The dedication is real.
Speaking directly to the Honey Beez, Ross added:
“Please know that you are celebrated, valued, and admired for the joy you bring to the Hornet Nation, and for the bold and fearless way you represent the very best of ASU.” We see you, ladies!
Who Is Joe Bullard?
Bullard, a long-time announcer and a fixture in FAMU’s band culture, has been known as “the voice” of the Marching 100. But this latest slip-up has thrown shade on his whole legacy. We all make mistakes, but this one… whew.
As of now, Bullard hasn’t issued a public apology, but folks are calling on him — and FAMU — to make things right not just with Alabama State, but directly with the Honey Beez. Time will tell.
A Larger Conversation
This ain’t just about one announcer’s trash talk. It’s kicked off a whole conversation about body shaming, respectability politics, and the harsh spotlight on plus-sized women — especially our Black queens.
The Honey Beez, who’ve been getting major media love for their boldness and talent, represent more than just a dance squad. They’re showing us inclusivity and confidence, values that should be front and center in HBCU culture. They are setting the standard.
The ball’s in FAMU’s court now. Will Joe Bullard step up and apologize? Will the university put out a statement? The HBCU family — and all of social media — are watching. 👀
