Under the soaring ceiling of the Governor's Room, the city's youngest mayor in more than a century and its first Democratic Socialist responded to questions on issues important to African Americans. The 34-year-old was characteristically charming but deftly evasive. He discussed his African origins and why his parents gave him the middle name Kwame. Born in Uganda, he moved to South Africa at five and to the United States at seven. He addressed the shrinking Black population, gentrification of historically Black neighborhoods, school segregation, reparations, and his relationship with Donald Trump. His consistent theme was that his economic agenda focused on childcare, transportation, housing, and affordability was fundamental to improving New Yorkers' lives.

Inside the Governor’s Room at New York City Hall, beneath soaring ceilings, Eric Adams faced a room full of questions about his vision for Black New Yorkers. The 34-year-old mayor, the city’s youngest in over a century and its first to openly identify as a Democratic Socialist, moved through the topics with practiced charm and careful precision.

He was engaging when the conversation turned personal—his Ugandan origins, why his parents chose the middle name Kwame—but noticeably more guarded when the questions got harder. A Eric Adams conversation, it seemed, had its limits.

Photo: Amber Ferguson

Born in Uganda, Adams moved to South Africa at five and didn’t arrive in the United States until age seven. He joked about still speaking some Ugandan—”just enough to hustle,” he said with a grin. But the lightness faded when the discussion shifted to harder territory: the shrinking Black population in the city, gentrification consuming historically Black neighborhoods, the extreme segregation baked into New York’s public schools, questions about reparations, and his fraught relationship with Donald Trump.

Throughout it all, Adams returned to the same throughline. His economic agenda—childcare, transportation, housing, affordability—wasn’t presented as the whole answer, but as foundational. Fix the cost of living, he argued, and you address the conditions that matter most to New Yorkers across the board.

Photo: Lamar Brickus

When asked how he’d measure success by the end of his term, Adams didn’t hedge. “A more affordable city,” he said simply. It’s a straightforward metric, the kind that either tracks or doesn’t. Whether his policies can deliver on it remains the question everyone’s actually waiting to see answered.

The sickle cell community has never had the luxury of waiting for America to catch up. For generations, Black families have fought to convince doctors their pain is real, demanded research for a disease long ignored and built support systems where institutions fell short. Now, as the Trump administration proposes healthcare rollbacks that advocates say threaten insurance coverage and critical medical funding, they’re preparing for yet another battle.

Not because they want to, but because they’ve learned survival often depends on becoming their own strongest advocates. With federal regulators accepting public comments only through the end of the month, many say the time to act is now. For families navigating sickle cell disease–a genetic blood disorder that disproportionately affects Black Americans, according to the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America–the stakes are especially high.

For Ayana Johnson, a college student, entrepreneur, Miss Virginia’s Outstanding Teen 2023 and lifelong sickle cell warrior, the policy debate is deeply personal. She has SC sickle cell, a variant she says is heavily misunderstood.

“The stigmatization, for sure,” Johnson told The Root. “I have SC sickle cell, which is the perfect example of how much I’m stereotyped to feel like, ‘Oh, it’s just not that bad,’ or ‘SS is more severe.’ That’s one of the biggest misconceptions.”

Those assumptions extend beyond medicine. “Another misconception is that we’re not hardworking–that we’re lazy,” she explained. “I encourage everybody to understand that warriors have the capability to do anything.”

Ayana Johnson. Screenshot from Instagram

Johnson credits her family’s support with teaching her how to advocate for herself from an early age. That skill became essential as she transitioned from pediatric to adult healthcare.

“There’s a lot of unique and complex things that go into making sure healthcare providers can take care of us properly,” she told us. “I’ve always been trained to advocate for myself.”

That self-advocacy has become increasingly important as uncertainty surrounds healthcare funding and research. “There has been more of a push for research in recent years,” Johnson said. “But with this current administration, research practices for sickle cell disease have been frozen. This disease has been around for over a century, and there should be a lot more progress than there currently is.”

A coalition of 48 patient advocacy organizations is now urging the public to oppose proposed federal healthcare changes they argue would strip coverage from millions of Americans living with chronic illnesses. Johnson worries that Medicaid reductions, insurance changes and rising healthcare costs will leave patients without access to lifesaving treatment.

“It’s prohibiting a lot of sickle cell warriors from having simple things like access to medication, which should be something very simple that all sickle cell warriors deserve,” Johnson says. “It’s been extremely scary for myself and other warriors to watch how health organizations are not continuing to recognize the urgency surrounding sickle cell disease.”

While sickle cell disease disproportionately affects Black Americans, Johnson wanted to remind folks that the disease crosses racial and ethnic lines. “Sickle cell can, will, and has affected Americans from all walks of life,” she said. “It’s imperative that we continue to understand that.”

She also encouraged patients to seek supportive therapies alongside traditional medical care when appropriate. “I’ve used acupuncture, massage therapy, and other holistic therapies that help enhance my quality of life,” Johnson said. “But we also have to continue advocating for one another and pushing legislators to do what’s right.”

For Johnson’s mother, Hermionne Johnson, the battle has been watching the healthcare system fail her daughter despite knowing firsthand how it’s supposed to work. As a registered nurse, caregiver, CEO and co-founder of Ayana’s Hope Cells, Hermionne says her daughter’s diagnosis fueled a mission to challenge the inequities facing families like theirs.

“Before Ayana’s diagnosis, I believed medicine was fundamentally fair,” she told us. “Then newborn screening changed everything.”

Ayana Johnson and her mother, Hermionne Johnson. Screenshot from Instagram

As both a healthcare professional and caregiver, Hermionne learned that information alone cannot overcome systemic barriers. “I discovered that families had to fight to be believed,” she said. “That pain was questioned before it was treated.”

“Eventually I realized something painful,” she continued. “Not every misunderstanding is caused by a lack of information. Sometimes it’s bias. Sometimes it’s culture. Sometimes it’s systems that were never designed to hear families like ours.”

Those realities shape how she views current healthcare policy debates. “I don’t believe caregivers have the luxury of surrendering to despair,” she said. “Every time a funding stream disappears, every time a research program is reduced, every time a public health office closes, families like mine don’t get to pause. Sickle cell disease doesn’t wait for the next election cycle.”

Hermionne emphasized that while Black families have historically built networks to compensate for gaps in healthcare–from nonprofits to blood drives and legislative advocacy–resilience should never be interpreted as a reason to reduce public investment. She also rejected the idea that hope is passive.

“Hope isn’t optimism,” she says. “Hope is disciplined action despite uncertainty.”

That philosophy informs her call to readers. “Stop believing that healthcare is somebody else’s issue,” the mother said. “Healthcare policy determines who receives research funding, who gets diagnosed, who receives pain medication, which hospitals stay open, and who lives longer.”

She urges people to vote in every election, learn who serves on state health committees, support sickle cell organizations throughout the year, donate blood, volunteer and contact legislators. “Policy isn’t paperwork,” she added. “Policy eventually becomes someone’s prognosis.”

Advocates say policy deadlines loom, and the outcome could have lasting consequences for thousands of families living with sickle cell disease. Their message is clear: this isn’t simply a political debate. It’s about whether patients with chronic illnesses can continue accessing the care, research and treatment they need to survive.

For the Johnson family and countless others, that fight continues long after the headlines fade.

fitness influencer culture took a tragic turn when Connor Murphy, the controversial American fitness influencer known for his bodybuilding videos and “looksmaxxing” content, died in an apparent drowning in Thailand on July 7. He was 32.

According to the Bangkok Post and Thairath, police in Thailand’s Samut Prakan province were called to a luxury rental property Tuesday afternoon after reports that a man was “acting erratically.” Understanding the pressures of social media fame and fitness influencer culture has become increasingly important as we witness the real costs of online visibility.

When officers arrived, Murphy reportedly ran toward a nearby lake, jumped into the water, and swam for several minutes. Local outlets reported that he appeared to become exhausted before disappearing beneath the surface.

Rescue divers later recovered his body about 20 meters from shore, police told the publications. Authorities reportedly found no visible signs of assault and ordered an autopsy to determine his cause of death.

Investigators also discovered two unused syringes and several white pills inside a bag in Murphy’s vehicle, according to the reports. Officials have not publicly said whether those items played any role in his death.

Murphy had reportedly rented the property for three months with his 22-year-old girlfriend. Police found black and yellow paint throughout parts of the home, which his girlfriend said had been applied overnight while she slept. She reportedly told authorities his behavior was unusual and had not occurred before.

Murphy built an audience of more than 2.7 million followers across YouTube and Instagram, yet behind the curated posts and highlight reels lay struggles that remain largely unknown to his audience.

While Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was focused on training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, a family crisis unfolded hundreds of miles away. On Sunday evening in Ashburn, Virginia, Loudoun County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a shooting at a home that would leave his wife critically wounded and his adult son facing serious felony charges.

When officers arrived at the residence in the 20000 block of Northpark Drive, they found Eric Bieniemy‘s wife Mia, 57, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and arm. She was transported to a local hospital and listed in stable condition by Monday. The suspect taken into custody was her own son, 27-year-old Elijah Zion Bieniemy, who was booked on charges of malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling.

Elijah now remains in custody at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center as the investigation continues.

The incident sent shockwaves through the NFL community. Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid, who has led the team for 13 years, released a statement expressing his support for Bieniemy during what he called an impossibly difficult time.

“Our hearts go out to Eric Bieniemy and his family. Thoughts and prayers with them,” Reid said. “I can’t get into details on it, but things happen sometimes, and Eric will work through it. He has a great support group here, as does his family, as needed, and we’ll just let time take care of it from there. But Mia is stable, which is a plus.”

Eric and Mia Bieniemy at the Super Bowl Championship Ring Ceremony on June 15, 2023 in Kansas City, Missouri.

Reid described Mia as “a saint” and “one of God’s great blessings,” emphasizing the need for time and healing as the family navigates this tragedy. “Things happen. And you have to work through it. That’s where we’re at right now. Time will have to be involved in this to help heal,” he said.

Bieniemy was absent from Monday’s team workout. Reid indicated the duration of his absence remains unclear as the situation develops and the investigation proceeds.

Real Housewives of Orange County is serving up drama once again. Shannon Beador is drawing a clear line with Tamra Judge—and it’s not moving. She’s willing to share a room and laugh together, but that’s genuinely where she wants the relationship to stay.

“I can be in a room [with her]. I can share a laugh [with her],” Shannon told Entertainment Tonight ahead of the Season 20 premiere. When asked if that could spark a real friendship comeback, Shannon kept it real: “Let’s just keep it there. I’m not trying to be an asshole. That’s just what is best for me.” You can dive deeper into this on Real Housewives of Orange County coverage for all the latest tea.

Shannon and Tamra have been through it all during their years on the Bravo series. Friendship, feuds, reconciliation attempts—they’ve cycled through every version of the relationship. It’s exhausting just thinking about it. Their latest rift hits different though, especially with Vicki Gunvalson’s return bringing the original Tres Amigas back together on the same cast.

Here’s where it gets interesting: Tamra recently revealed that she and Shannon spoke on the phone for two hours. Gina Kirschenheiter wasn’t having it. “I filmed an entire season of us trying to get [you two] together, and now you’re going to be on the phone for two hours?” Gina called out the contradiction. Sometimes the best conversations happen behind closed doors, away from the cameras and the pressure to perform harmony. That’s real talk.

Season 20 of The Real Housewives of Orange County premieres July 9 on Bravo and arrives on Peacock the next day.

David Jonsson will take on the role of T'Challa's son in Black Panther 3, introducing another Black British powerhouse to Hollywood. Black British talent has steadily dominated the industry, from Chiwetel Ejiofor leading horror films to Aaron Pierre becoming the face of DC's Lanterns. Other notable Black British actors making waves include Naomi Ackie, Tosin Cole, and Cynthia Erivo, who earned an Oscar nomination for Wicked. Veterans like Idris Elba, Daniel Kaluuya, and Lashana Lynch continue commanding major roles across franchises. Emerging stars like Damson Idris and Regé-Jean Page are solidifying their status as leading men in Hollywood.

Black British actors are having a moment in Hollywood that feels genuinely significant. The announcement of David Jonsson stepping into the role of T’Challa’s son in “Black Panther 3” signals something larger: a new generation of British talent is reshaping how major franchises cast their leading roles. From horror to superheroes to prestige drama, Black British actors are no longer occupying supporting roles. They’re carrying films.

The pattern extends far beyond Marvel. Aaron Pierre headlined “Mufasa: The Lion King” and landed the role of the first Black Green Lantern in DC’s “Lanterns.” Chiwetel Ejiofor led A24’s “Backrooms.” These aren’t coincidences. Hollywood has woken up to the fact that there’s genuine star power across the Atlantic, and talent scouts have noticed.

Jonsson’s rise has been methodical. He earned his chops in HBO’s gritty finance drama “Industry” and the 2023 British rom-com “Rye Lane” before landing critical praise for “The Long Walk.” Playing Peter McVries in that 2025 horror film proved he could handle dark material with nuance. Now he’s poised to join one of cinema’s biggest franchises.

Naomi Ackie

Naomi Ackie attends the Los Angeles premiere of Neon’s “I Love Boosters” at DGA Theater Complex on May 13, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.
Ackie has made smart moves. She appeared in Boots Riley’s comedy “I Love Boosters” and then landed a role in Bong Joon Ho’s “Mickey 17″—a sci-fi project that carries serious prestige. Now she’s crossing into the DC Universe with “Clayface,” a horror-inflected take on the DC villain. She’s picking projects that showcase range.

Tosin Cole

Cast member Tosin Cole attends the press night after party for “Shifters” at Larry’s at the National Portrait Gallery on August 21, 2024 in London, England.
Cole emerged as a leading man through the British Netflix drama “Supacell,” proving he could anchor a series. He followed that with the legal drama “61st Street” alongside Courtney B. Vance and is now joining the ensemble cast of “Children of Blood and Bone,” adapting Tomi Adeyemi’s Nigerian fantasy novel. The trajectory is clear: he’s building toward bigger roles.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje

Actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje attends the SAG-AFTRA Foundation Conversations Presents “Euphoria” event at The Meryl Streep Center for Performing Artists on June 08, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.
Akinnuoye-Agbaje brought menace to the final season of HBO’s “Euphoria” as one of the primary antagonists. His career spans from playing Killer Croc in “Suicide Squad” to appearing in the 2005 drama “Get Rich or Die Tryin'” and the 2014 “Annie” adaptation. He’s the kind of actor who elevates ensemble casts and brings credibility to major studio films.

Chiwetel Ejiofor

Actor Chiwetel Ejiofor attends the Los Angeles Special Screening of A24’s “Backrooms” at the Aero Theatre on May 07, 2026 in Santa Monica, California.
Ejiofor’s career trajectory represents what’s possible for British actors willing to play the long game. “12 Years a Slave” established him as a serious performer. “The Martian” proved he could work in blockbusters. This year, leading A24’s “Backrooms” showed he could carry a genre film. He’s become a touchstone for quality.

Delroy Lindo

Delroy Lindo attends the 98th Oscars at Dolby Theatre on March 15, 2026 in Hollywood, California.
Lindo represents the old guard of British talent who’ve been in Hollywood for decades but often go overlooked. He appeared in Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X,” the 2000 action film “Romeo Must Die,” and earned his first Academy Award nomination for Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners.” Many are still surprised to learn he’s British—a testament to how fully he’s integrated into American cinema.

Thandiwe Newton

Thandiwe Newton attends the premiere of Columbia Pictures’ “Anaconda” at The United Theater on Broadway on December 13, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.
Newton is a household name whose filmography reads like a greatest-hits compilation. “Mission: Impossible 2,” “The Pursuit of Happyness,” “Solo: A Star Wars Story”—she’s been in franchise films across multiple genres. She’s currently working with Michaela Coel on the drama series “First Day On Earth,” pairing two generations of British talent.

Naomie Harris

Naomie Harris attends the Closing Night red carpet at the Red Sea International Film Festival 2025 on December 11, 2025 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Harris has shown serious range. She delivered a career-defining performance in the 2016 drama “Moonlight” and stood opposite Daniel Craig in “No Time to Die.” Now she’s moving into television with the BBC legal drama “Reputation,” where she plays a lawyer handling a high-profile celebrity case. The shift to prestige TV feels natural for her career arc.

Wunmi Mosaku

Wunmi Mosaku attends the 2026 Vanity Fair Oscar Party Hosted By Mark Guiducci at Los Angeles County Museum of Art on March 15, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.
Mosaku made an impression in Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners,” capturing Hollywood’s attention. She’s now working on the 2026 biographical drama “The Social Reckoning” and lending her voice to “Batman: Caped Crusader” season two. Her trajectory shows how quickly talent can move from emerging to established.

Cynthia Erivo

Cynthia Erivo attends SBIFF’s Kirk Douglas Award Honoring Cynthia Erivo at The Ritz Carlton Bacara on December 04, 2025 in Santa Barbara, California.
Erivo earned an Oscar nomination for “Wicked” as Elphaba and continued that success in “Wicked: For Good.” She’s now moving into fantasy with “Children of Blood and Bone,” where she’ll play Admiral Kaea. Her ability to shift between musical theater and dramatic film work makes her a rare talent.

Aaron Pierre

Aaron Pierre at the 2026 EE BAFTA Film Awards held at The Royal Festival Hall on February 22, 2026 in London, England.
Pierre’s breakout through “Mufasa: The Lion King” has translated into serious momentum. Landing the role of the first Black Green Lantern in DC’s “Lanterns” is a major deal. He’s also voiced Mane Attraction in the animated sports film “GOAT.” His rise has been meteoric, and there’s no sign of it slowing.

Idris cut his teeth on FX’s “Snowfall” in 2017, establishing himself as a leading man before breaking into film. “F1″ brought him serious acclaim, and now he’s everywhere—”Children of Blood and Bone,” the Miles Davis biopic “Miles & Juliette.” He represents a generation that came up through prestige television and translated that success to cinema.

Idris Elba

Elba has been a fixture for decades. “The Wire” and “Luther” established his star power. He’s proven himself in blockbusters like “Sonic the Hedgehog” and now appears in “Masters of the Universe.” He’s also joining the cast of “Children of Blood and Bone.” At this point, he’s past proof of concept—he’s Hollywood infrastructure.

Laviscount became widely known through Netflix’s “Emily in Paris.” Now he’s branching into darker material with the 2026 psychological horror film “Strung” and the romance “People We Meet on Vacation,” adapting Emily Henry’s novel. He’s testing different genres, trying to expand beyond his Netflix profile.

Boyega had a quieter stretch after “The Woman King” and “They Cloned Tyrone,” but he’s back with the supernatural horror film “The Punishing.” His return to the screen feels deliberate—he’s choosing projects that interest him rather than chasing anything available.

Lashana Lynch

Lynch has worked across multiple franchises. She appeared in “No Time to Die” as a James Bond character and was part of the MCU’s “Captain Marvel.” Now she’s joining “Children of Blood and Bone,” adding another major franchise to her resume. She’s become the kind of actor studios want in their tentpole films.

Michaela Coel

Michaela Coel attends “The Christophers” London Premiere at 15 Great Windmill Street on April 21, 2026 in London, England.
Coel’s journey has been distinct. Her HBO series “I May Destroy You” was groundbreaking television. She appeared in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and this year featured in the musical drama “Mother Mary” alongside Anne Hathaway. She moves between small and large projects without losing her voice.

Daniel Kaluuya

Daniel Kaluuya attends the opening night red carpet for “Giant” at the Red Sea International Film Festival 2025 on December 04, 2025 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Kaluuya’s Oscar win for “Judas and the Black Messiah” made him the first Black British actor to win in that category. That landmark achievement shifted conversations about representation in major awards. He’s now in A24’s thriller “Hotel Hotel Hotel Hotel” and Chris Rock’s comedy-drama “Misty Green.” He’s working with major auteurs who want his presence.

Jodie Turner-Smith

Jodie Turner-Smith attends the 2026 BET Awards at Peacock Theater on June 28, 2026 in Los Angeles, California.
Turner-Smith brought gravity to “Queen & Slim” and showed range in “After Yang.” She’s now in the sci-fi action film “Tron: Ares” and is a key presence in Netflix’s thriller series “The Agency.” She’s building a diverse portfolio that spans genres and platforms.

Regé-Jean Page

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – APRIL 08: Regé-Jean Page attends Universal Pictures’ “You, Me & Tuscany” New York premiere at Jazz at Lincoln Center on April 08, 2026 in New York City. (Photo by Dia Dipasupil/WireImage)

Page’s turn in Netflix’s “Bridgerton” made him a heartthrob, but he’s not getting typecast. He just played opposite Halle Bailey in the romantic comedy “You, Me & Tuscany.” Now he’s returning to Netflix for the erotic thriller “Hancock Park.” He’s testing different waters, moving beyond the Regency romance space.

Kingsley Ben-Adir

Kingsley Ben-Adir at the 56th NAACP Image Awards held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium on February 22, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.
Ben-Adir gave a striking performance as Malcolm X in “One Night in Miami.” That led to the musical biopic “Bob Marley: One Love,” which he delivered with credibility. Now he’s in the prison drama “Frank & Louis.” He’s become the kind of actor directors want when they’re tackling historical or culturally significant material.

David Oyelowo

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – AUGUST 19: David Oyelowo attends the Los Angeles Premiere of “Splitsville” at AMC The Grove 14 on August 19, 2025 in Los Angeles, California.
Oyelowo leads the Apple TV+ comedy-drama “Government Cheese” and appears in the 2026 drama “Newborn.” He’s also working on “Clarissa,” inspired by Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway.” He’s mixing commercial and literary projects, building a career that feels intentional and varied.

In just a few weeks, students all over the country will be walking down the various halls of their college campuses to usher in another start of school season. But when it comes to HBCU students in particular, you already know they're going to strut to their campuses in tiptop fashion! That's why we thought it'd be fun to take a look at how some of the students already came to give you a good gauge as to what you can expect here soon.

In just a few weeks, students across the country will head back to campus. But HBCU fashion is its own beast entirely. These students don’t just walk through campus—they make an entrance.

We took a closer look at how HBCU fashion is already showing up this season, and the bar is undeniably high. If these fits are any sign of what’s coming, fall semester is about to be a style showcase.

School Pride

There’s nothing wrong with wearing your school colors with intention. When you match a college tee with a complementary skirt or bottom, you create something that feels entirely your own. That’s what real school spirit looks like.

A Chill Vibe

Not every day calls for a full statement look. Sometimes a chill vibe is exactly what the moment needs. Comfortable fits that don’t demand attention are just as valid on campus as anything else.

Reversible Tracksuits

Now this is a look that would have the entire yard talking. A reversible tracksuit is the kind of piece that says you thought about your fit—and won it.

Denim on Denim

Screenshot: TikTok/@angel.mambs

Denim on denim is already a solid move, but this student elevated it further. The addition of a Telfar bag sealed the deal. That’s a 10/10 execution.

A Group Slay

Screenshot: TikTok/Abthesavv

Fashion doesn’t hit the same when your friends aren’t in on it. Delaware State students showed what a coordinated group moment looks like—unified but still individual. That’s the blueprint.

Unique and One of One

One of the best things about HBCU life is the space it gives you to figure out who you are style-wise. This is where you experiment, risk it, and maybe discover your signature look. Some students are already leaning into that freedom in ways that feel genuinely personal.

Howard Homecoming Shut Down

Screenshot: TikTok/Lojotaughtyou

This look pulls from the 80s and 90s simultaneously, which tracks for Howard. They know how to blend eras without it feeling forced, and they show up for homecoming knowing exactly what they’re doing.

Homecoming Drip, Howard Edition

Screenshot: TikTok/Lojotaughtyou

Brown-on-brown monochromatic looks don’t sound complicated, but they require confidence. This Howard student understood the assignment completely. This is what commitment to a vision looks like.

Reppin’ Faith

Screenshot: TikTok/@angel.mambs

Not every fit is about repping your school or your Greek letters. Some students use their fashion to represent something deeper. That’s equally valid and often speaks louder.

Prints and School Spirit

When you’ve got a statement top, you don’t necessarily need a statement bottom. But sometimes the magic happens when both are doing something. This is one of those times when it worked.

Get Acquainted With Business Casual

Screenshot: TikTok/Notzymarialol

There’s a running joke about HBCU students treating business casual like a uniform—and honestly, it’s not entirely wrong. The difference is that when students execute it with intention like this, it stops being a joke and becomes a statement.

Chill and Cool

For every student in a suit, there’s another one who keeps it simple. A fitted hat, a layered look, jeans. Sometimes that’s all you need.

Uniforms, But Make It Jazzy

Uniforms used to be a limitation. Now they’re another canvas. Clark Atlanta students showed you can take what’s required and turn it into something that feels like a choice. That creativity should absolutely make an appearance this semester.

Celebrity relationships can get messy fast, especially when they play out in the public eye. Klay Thompson is learning this the hard way after his split from Megan Thee Stallion made headlines. Now, fellow NBA player Tristan Thompson is offering him some real talk about how to handle the drama—and it’s surprisingly wise advice.

“Don’t say anything,” Tristan shared during an appearance on Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay. “If you speak up, you give it more legs.” It’s solid wisdom from someone who knows what it’s like to deal with celebrity relationships under intense scrutiny. The four-time NBA champion and Grammy-winning rapper reportedly dated for nine months before calling it quits. Following the breakup, Megan appeared to hint at infidelity, while another report suggested Klay felt she was too “ghetto” for him.

Tristan’s point is simple: engaging in back-and-forth drama only keeps the story alive. “You had a relationship with someone, an artist. It didn’t work out,” he explained. “If she wants to say something, let her do whatever she wants to do.” It’s the kind of advice that comes from experience—Tristan has navigated his own highly publicized breakup with Khloé Kardashian, with whom he shares daughter True and son Tatum. His past infidelities and the complicated nature of their relationship taught him hard lessons about public perception.

“Honestly, as a man, keep your mouth quiet,” Tristan continued. “Because I’ve never gone out there and defended myself.” He emphasized that Klay should focus on what matters—enjoying his time away from the spotlight, whether that’s fishing or whatever brings him peace.

Beyond the immediate drama, Tristan called for all athletes in new relationships to protect their privacy. “Our life is so public, some things should be left private if you can,” he reflected. “If everything in your life can be touched and messed around with, what do you have to yourself?” It’s a powerful reminder that not every moment needs to be defended, explained, or shared with the world. Sometimes silence really is golden.
