Florida Democratic Party Vice Chair and Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen Found Dead, Husband Stephen Bowen Arrested in Domestic Violence Case.
Florida has been shaken by the tragic death of Nancy Metayer Bowen, Florida Democratic Party Vice Chair and Coral Springs Vice Mayor. The prominent Haitian-American politician, who was gearing up to announce a congressional run, was found dead in her home Wednesday morning following a police wellness check.
Her husband, Stephen Bowen, is in custody after initially fleeing to Plantation where he was apprehended. Coral Springs Police are investigating her death as a domestic violence incident, with no additional suspects named.
Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried released a heartfelt statement: “It is with a broken heart and profound grief that the Florida Democratic Party mourns the sudden and horrific death of our beloved Vice Chair, Nancy Metayer Bowen… Her memory will forever be a blessing to me, to our party, and to every person whose life she touched.”
Metayer Bowen made history as the first Black and Haitian American woman elected Coral Springs Commissioner in 2020, was reelected in 2024, and served as Vice Mayor in November 2025. She was reportedly preparing to challenge Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick in the Democratic primary for a congressional seat.
The community is reeling from this loss, with widespread calls for justice and transparency in the investigation. As details continue to emerge, Black Cosmopolitans join Florida Democrats in mourning a trailblazing leader whose commitment to public service and her community will be remembered.
