In a powerful interview, Halle Bailey has called out the entertainment industry for the unfair standards it still holds Black films and projects to. The star of the upcoming live-action remake of ‘The Little Mermaid’ expressed her frustration at the extra challenges Black films must overcome to achieve success.
Halle Bailey noted that while progress has been made, there is still a clear racial bias in how Hollywood approaches and judges Black-led films. ‘It shouldn’t be like that,’ she said. ‘We should be able to have the same resources and the same amount of attention and marketing put into our films.’
The actress pointed to the industry’s history of undervaluing and underfunding Black projects, even when they prove to be commercially successful. ‘There’s this impression that if a Black film does well, it’s an anomaly,’ Bailey explained. ‘But the reality is, we’ve always had the talent, the stories, and the audience. We just need the same opportunities.’
Bailey’s comments echo the sentiments of many other Black creatives who have spoken out about the systemic biases they face. From financing hurdles to marketing disparities, Black films often have to work twice as hard to achieve the same levels of success as their white counterparts.
Yet despite these challenges, the industry continues to produce groundbreaking Black-led projects across film, TV, music, and more. Halle Bailey herself is poised to make history with her role as Ariel in the live-action ‘The Little Mermaid’ – a casting decision that faced backlash from some, but also widespread celebration from the Black community.
As Bailey noted, the talent and the audience are there. Now the onus is on Hollywood to truly commit to equity and inclusion, and provide the resources and support for Black creatives to flourish. Only then can the industry reflect the rich diversity of stories and perspectives that exist.
