We are heartbroken to share that Kiki Shepard, the legendary co-host of Showtime at the Apollo, has passed away at 74. Kiki Shepard was a true icon who graced the Apollo stage for 15 incredible years, helping launch the careers of so many superstars. Her smile, her style, and her spirit lit up that famous stage alongside Steve Harvey from 1987 to 2002.The news hit hard yesterday after she suffered a massive heart attack in Los Angeles. It was sudden and completely unexpected. Kiki Shepard wasn’t just an Apollo legend though—she made her mark on television too, appearing on shows like A Different World, Baywatch, NYPD Blue, Everybody Hates Chris, and Grey’s Anatomy. She also brought laughs in the holiday film Blackjack Christmas.
Before all the TV fame, Kiki got her start as a professional dancer in the early 1970s with the D.C. Repertory Dance Company, performing worldwide. Her Broadway credits included Bubbling Brown Sugar, Your Arms Too Short to Box With God, and Porgy and Bess—showing just how versatile she really was.
Kiki Shepard’s impact on Black entertainment and culture simply cannot be measured. She helped shape an entire era and gave a platform to generations of talent. She was 74 years old.
Rest in peace. 🕊️
