In Softly as I Leave You: Life After Elvis, hitting shelves September 23, Priscilla Presley gets real about her time with Robert. They dated for about a year in the mid-70s, a period post her divorce from the King.
Priscilla Presley calls Robert Kardashian ‘a sweet man’
“Robert was a sweet man, and I liked him,” Priscilla shares in her book (via People). But, like many sistahs chasing dreams, she wasn’t quite ready for the commitment he wanted. His demanding career as a lawyer, and the lingering feelings for Elvis, made it impossible. Kardashian wanted to say “I Do,” but she wasn’t there yet.
“Robert wanted to get married, but I knew it wouldn’t work. I wasn’t ready to marry again,” she explains. And sometimes, queens have to put themselves first.
While Priscilla was still emotionally tangled with Elvis, Kardashian’s ex—and future wife—Kris Jenner, was still hung up on her former flame, the one she’d met at just 17 years old. Talk about a whole lotta love and drama, right?
After Kris and Robert parted ways, a friend introduced the lawyer to Priscilla. Jenner admitted in her 2011 memoir, Kris Jenner … And All Things Kardashian, that they were “instantly smitten” with each other.

Kris pursued a career as a flight attendant after her split from Robert. But, you know how it is, the heart wants what it wants, and he was still very much on her mind. Some flames just burn forever.
“I was living in a flight attendants’ dormitory in Fort Worth, bummed that Kardashian was going to end up with Priscilla Presley,” Kris shared. “She was gorgeous, of course, petite and perfect and beautiful and famous. I would see pictures of her and just die. Any woman would be thrilled to look like Priscilla Presley.”
The future Keeping Up With the Kardashians star may have felt like she couldn’t compete with Priscilla. But Robert definitely couldn’t compete with Elvis. While he and Priscilla were divorced, he still struggled with the idea of her moving on. Can’t say we haven’t been there!
In her new book, Priscilla remembers a late-night phone call from her ex-husband while she was in bed with Kardashian. That’s a plot twist straight outta a movie!
“It hadn’t crossed [Elvis’] mind that I might have been asleep. It had certainly never occurred to him that I might be with another man,” Presley writes. “Despite our divorce, he still couldn’t wrap his head around my being with someone else.” Talk about ego!
If Elvis had found out the truth, he wouldn’t have handled it well.
“He’d have gone ballistic, maybe literally, if he’d known Robert was in my bedroom,” Priscilla wrote. “Elvis always carried a loaded gun, sometimes more than one.” Yikes! That’s some serious drama.
Despite their breakup, there were no hard feelings between Priscilla and Kardashian. When Elvis passed away in 1977, her ex reached out. And when Kardashian was battling cancer in 2003, Kris explained in her memoir that she “facilitated” a call between him and his former girlfriend so that “Priscilla was able to say goodbye.” Now that’s growth, understanding and closure.
