Halloween season is officially here, family! This month isn’t just for the little ones collecting candy; it’s our chance to binge-watch those scary movies we secretly love (or love to hate!). We all have that one flick that keeps us up at night… or maybe that’s just me?
Scary movies? They’re pop culture cornerstones, no doubt.
Some analysts did a study to find each state’s fave horror film. I’m not sure how scientific it is, but I think it’s pretty accurate. My all-time fave? Wes Craven’s Scream. Turns out, my fellow Virginians are fans too! Scream is part horror, part parody, about a fright-masked maniac stalking high-schoolers. Kevin Williamson, who created Dawson’s Creek, wrote the screenplay. Who would have thought?
The Ring (you know, the one about watching another scary film) took the top spot in eighteen states! It’s based on the Japanese psychological horror Ringu. You watch a cursed videotape, and BAM! Seven days to live.
And the scariest movie ever? According to some folks, it’s It, based on Stephen King’s novel. From book to TV to the big screen, It and its sequel, It: Chapter One, still give us the creeps.
Speaking of childhood trauma… The average person watched their first horror film at 7.2 years old. I can vouch for this. My first? A Nightmare On Elm Street. I was six! Freddy Krueger, the dream stalker, became a character in my childhood. My brother even drew pictures of him. Mom was pretty chill about what we watched. I mean, this is the same woman who let her 9-year-old watch Hellraiser!
State pride is real, especially when your state is the setting for a horror film. Colorado loves The Shining, Pennsylvania digs Night of the Living Dead, and Texas reps The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I mean, it’s in the title, Texas!
What do you think of the list? Do you agree with the picks? Holla in the comments below! Have a happy and safe Halloween!
