Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is switching things up — and the culture is definitely taking notice!
Our favorite wrestler-turned-Hollywood heavyweight hit the Venice International Film Festival on Sept. 1, and the timeline’s been buzzing ever since. Why? He debuted a noticeably slimmer frame. Word is, the new physique is all for his upcoming role in The Smashing Machine. He’s set to portray legendary MMA fighter Mark Kerr in this gritty biopic, written and directed by Benny Safdie.
“This transformation was something I was really hungry to do,” Johnson told The Hollywood Reporter. “I’ve been blessed with the career I’ve had, but there was always a little voice inside saying, What if I could do more?” We feel that! It’s all about pushing those boundaries and showing the world what you’re capable of.
Johnson graced the red carpet alongside co-star Emily Blunt, who plays Kerr’s then-wife Dawn. The premiere was supercharged with emotion when the film received a 15-minute standing ovation. Sources say both Johnson and Safdie were moved to tears as Kerr himself looked on. Talk about a powerful moment of recognition!
This performance represents a daring departure for Johnson, whom we’ve come to adore in action-packed blockbusters like Fast & Furious and family favorites like Moana. The Smashing Machine, set to drop in theaters October 3, promises to showcase The Rock flexing his acting muscles in a completely new and compelling way. We’re here for it!
