A magnificent 10-foot bronze statue of the legendary Tina Turner has graced Brownsville, Tennessee, with its unveiling on September 27, 2025. This powerful tribute stands proudly in Heritage Park, a fitting location directly opposite Carver High School, a place where Turner herself honed her skills both in the classroom and on the basketball court during her formative teenage years. Brownsville, a town of about 9,000 souls, holds a special place in the heart of the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” serving as the gateway to Nutbush, the community of her early life that she so vividly immortalized in her iconic hit, “Nutbush City Limits.” The sculptor, Atlanta-based Fred Ajanogha, has masterfully captured the essence of Tina Turner, from her signature wild hair to her electrifying stage presence, depicting her mid-performance, microphone in hand, index finger extended in that unmistakable pose. This monumental tribute was a collaborative effort, commissioned by the City of Brownsville and brought to life with significant backing from Ford Motor Company and the generous contributions of some 50 donors. The statue itself, a brownstone monument, stands nearly 8 feet tall, complemented by a 2-foot base, bringing the total to an impressive 10 feet.
The unveiling was a cornerstone of the 10th-annual Tina Turner Heritage Days, a multi-day celebration from September 26–28, 2025, dedicated to honoring her life, her roots, and her profound, enduring influence on music and culture. This vibrant festival brought fans together in the very spaces where Turner walked as a child and teen, long before her meteoric rise to global superstardom. The festivities included a range of activities, from captivating concerts to insightful tours and warm gatherings, all designed to connect fans with the tangible legacy of the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” This new statue now stands as a central landmark, joining the Tina Turner Museum at Flagg Grove School and the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center, solidifying the area as a pilgrimage site for celebrating her remarkable journey.
While the statue is a powerful symbol of remembrance and celebration, there have been whispers and strong opinions circulating that many find the artistic execution to be less than ideal, even calling it an insult. It’s a sentiment that, unfortunately, often accompanies public art, especially when it aims to capture the spirit of such a beloved and iconic figure. Nevertheless, the intention behind the monument is clear: to honor a titan of music and a trailblazer whose impact resonates deeply. The presence of the Tina Turner statue in Brownsville is more than just a physical marker; it’s a testament to the enduring power of her music and the indelible mark she left on the world. We encourage everyone to learn more about Tina Turner and the rich cultural heritage she represents, a legacy that continues to inspire generations.
