A music giant is finally getting his flowers on film, and this time, the petals are platinum.

Word on the street is that Emmy-nominated filmmaker Chris Moukarbel (think Gaga: Five Foot Two) is knee-deep in a brand-new documentary about none other than the soulful architect of modern R&B, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds. This project is powered by HarbourView Equity Partners, with Kenya Barris joining the squad as producer – so, yeah, the vibes are elite.
This isn’t just a surface-level victory lap, y’all. Moukarbel is sitting down with Babyface for those deep-dive conversations about the highs, lows, and heartaches that shaped one of the most decorated careers in music. We can expect him to open up about his songwriting magic and the stories behind his monster hits with icons like Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Mary J. Blige, Boyz II Men, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Madonna, SZA, and a long list of legends that basically defined several eras of R&B and pop. Legendary status? Absolutely.
Behind the camera, Moukarbel’s Permanent Wave Productions links up with Barris and Jeremy Allen of Khalabo Ink Society, Douglas Banker, Rika Tischendorf, and Brande Baugh.
Babyface is a legendary singer, songwriter, and producer whose fingerprints are all over the sound of modern R&B and pop. Known for crafting timeless love songs and launching countless careers, he’s earned 13 Grammy Awards, including four Producer of the Year wins, been named BMI Pop Songwriter of the Year seven times, and contributed to more than 800 million records sold. Let’s not forget he’s also stacked up 16 Billboard #1 Pop singles, 45 #1 R&B singles, and over 125 Top 10 hits, while co-founding the iconic LaFace Records, the label behind stars like TLC, Usher, Outkast, and Ciara. His work spans hit albums, classic soundtracks, and some of the most defining songs in R&B history.
The documentary digs deep too, pulling from Babyface’s private archive, giving fans fly-on-the-wall access to his Vegas shows, and revisiting the film soundtracks he helped turn into classics: Boomerang, Soul Food, Waiting to Exhale, and the Oscar-winning Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey anthem “When You Believe.”
Sharing his excitement, Babhface said on social media:
“Finally telling the story of my life…. And I’m honored to do it with the best.”
Moukarbel said in a statement to Deadline,
“Babyface and his music has always been part of the soundtrack of my life… His imprint on the music world is massive.”
HarbourView founder Sherrese Clarke shared,
“Babyface’s influence on music and artistry is immeasurable — his songs have defined.”
And Kenya Barris, never one to hold back, said, “Babyface is one of one — a culture-defining hitmaker… who just might be one of the funniest mother*ckers I’ve ever met.”
With the amount of talent on and off screen, this documentary is shaping up to be a love letter to R&B, a celebration of Black excellence, and a long-overdue spotlight on the man whose pen and production shaped generations.
Babyface isn’t just telling his story — he’s finally owning it.
