Julia: 1968 Sitcom Star

“Julia” was a groundbreaking American television sitcom that first aired in 1968, making waves by starring Diahann Carroll as Julia Baker. This was a monumental moment, as it was the first American TV series to feature an Afro-American woman in the lead role, portraying a character who wasn’t a servant or a slave. This representation offered a refreshing glimpse of Black excellence and everyday life on a national stage. The show ran for 86 episodes on NBC from September 17, 1968, to March 23, 1971, produced by Savannah Productions, Inc., Hanncarr Productions, Inc., and 20th Century-Fox Television.

The series centered on Julia Baker, a widowed single mother whose husband, Army Capt. Baker, was shot down in Vietnam. Julia worked as a nurse in a doctor’s office at a large aerospace company, a depiction of a professional Black woman navigating life and career in a time when such portrayals were rare. The doctor, Morton Chegley, was played by Lloyd Nolan, and Julia’s romantic interests were brought to life by Paul Winfield and Fred Williamson. Julia’s son, Corey, played by Marc Copage, was a young boy who had barely known his father before his untimely death.

Corey’s best friend was Earl J. Waggedorn, a character whose full name Corey almost always used, while others simply called him Earl. The Waggedorns lived downstairs in the same apartment building, with Earl’s father, police officer Leonard (Hank Brandt), his stay-at-home mother Marie (Betty Beaird), and two sons. The show also featured nurse Hannah Yarby (Lurene Tuttle) in its first two seasons. Notably, “Julia” addressed themes of workplace discrimination when the clinic’s manager ordered downsizing and the removal of minorities. Dr. Chegley, however, stood firm, keeping Julia employed and reminding the manager that such actions violated the Civil Rights Act, a law that was only five years old at the time. Richard Steele appeared as Richard, a boy a couple of years older than Corey, and Lloyd Nolan also portrayed Dr. Chegley’s uncle, Dr. Norton Chegley.

“Julia” was more than just a sitcom; it was a cultural touchstone that challenged stereotypes and presented a dignified, nuanced portrait of Black life. It paved the way for future diverse programming and remains a significant piece of television history, reminding us of the power of representation and the ongoing journey towards inclusive storytelling.
