Director Ava DuVernay surprised fans on Hollywood’s biggest night when she revealed that she’s no longer single.
While walking the red carpet at the Academy Awards, the Oscar-nominated filmmaker casually introduced the world to a man she affectionately called “my honey.”

During a red carpet interview with ESSENCE correspondent Stacy Ike, Ava was asked to fill in the sentence:
“Right now I am proud of myself for ___.”
Ava paused for a moment, then smiled and looked toward the man standing beside her — whose hand she was holding tightly.
“Right now I am proud of myself for… coming to the Oscars with my honey, who I’ve kept hidden for a long time,” she said, laughing. “But now he’s here.”
Fans immediately started asking the obvious question:
Who is the mystery man?
Sources tell us that Ava’s new partner prefers to stay out of the spotlight — and he’s not a Hollywood celebrity.
Instead, we’re told he’s a 54-year-old professional pilot who flies Gulfstream private jets for ultra-wealthy VIP clients around the world.
In other words, Ava’s new man literally spends his days flying billionaires across the globe.
Not a bad gig.
They’ve Been Quietly Dating For A While
Even though the Oscars marked their most public appearance yet, this wasn’t actually the couple’s first outing together.
The pair were spotted together the night before the Oscars at the CHANEL and Charles Finch Pre-Oscar Dinner at the Beverly Hills Hotel.
And sharp-eyed fans noticed something even earlier.
When Ava posted a roundup of her favorite moments from 2025 on social media, one of the photos showed her standing very close to the same handsome mystery man.
At the time, most people didn’t realize it was her boyfriend.
Ava Had Been Proudly Single For Years
Before this reveal, Ava had long been seen as one of Hollywood’s most successful single women.
In fact, she openly discussed her unconventional life choices in past interviews.
The director previously explained that she chose not to marry or have children so she could focus on building her career.
“I didn’t have kids by choice, and I’m not married by choice,” she once explained.
