Angela Bassett Defends Disappointment Over 2023 Oscar Loss

Though it doesn’t mean she isn’t happy for Jamie Lee Curtis–who won her first-ever Oscar for her performance in Everything Everywhere All at Once–the acting legend still said the loss stung at the time.

“I love applauding people. But in that moment, I have put in: put in the time, put in good work over time. I didn’t think that was a gift. I thought it was a given,” she explained.

The Best Supporting Actress trophy in 2023 marked her second Oscar nomination, nearly 30 years after her Best Actress nomination for her performance as Tina Turner in 1993’s What’s Love Got to Do with It. But, in 2024, she did receive an Honorary Oscar for her contributions to the film industry as a whole. While accepting the award, Bassett gave a special shoutout to “trailblazing” Black actresses who came before her, including Ruby Dee, Diahann Carroll, Cicely Tyson and Rosalind Cash.

“They were my North Star, my guiding light, proof that while the road may not be without curves and bumps, there was a way to fulfill what I believed deep in my soul was my destiny,” she said. “It was standing on their strong, spiritually fortified shoulders that I often was sustained, and I thank them for every sacrifice, every doubt, every disappointment, every rejection, every triumph that I know they experienced along the way. Because had it not been for their resilience, continuing to fight through their fears and the uncertainty and their willingness as they fought for every role, I would not have had a representation of what was possible for me.”

“But this honor isn’t just for or about me,” she continued. “What I hope this moment means is that we are taking the necessary steps toward a future in which it is the norm, not the exception, to see and embrace one another’s full humanity, stories and perspectives.”

Elsewhere in her Town & Country interview, Bassett also reflected on her early days in the industry, explaining: “You’re just trying to find little pieces where you are, little moments of daylight to be able to do this. So no matter how small it was, it was just a joy and a blessing.”

BlackCosmopolitan sat down with Adeoye to discuss stepping into this complex role, drawing inspiration from his personal journey, and the highlights of bringing Under The Influence to life.

BlackCosmopolitan: How are you doing, and where is your head currently?

Iremide Adeoye: I’m doing alright; I’m taking it one step at a time. Thank you for asking. Right now, my head is in a space of growth and excitement for what’s ahead.

What stood out to you most when you first came across the script for the show?

The story’s relatability and my character’s personality stood out to me the most. The story captured not just big moments but the small, everyday emotions and experiences that make a character feel like someone you know.

My character, Dami2Fresh, has a distinct personality: witty but annoying, charismatic yet deeply flawed, and optimistic despite struggles. There’s a depth to him. One that made me love him instantly. Beyond that, the show itself reflects experiences that so many people go through, whether it’s navigating friendships and ambition, dealing with family expectations, figuring out who you are in a world that constantly tries to define you, pop culture, navigating a new reality of fame, finding your ground and even love relationships.

Talk us through what the preparation looked like.

My approach involved drawing from personal experiences and stepping outside my comfort zone to fully embody his identity. I spent time understanding his motivations, what drives him, and how his ambition shapes his decisions. I thought a lot about the transition from Ibadan to Lagos, something I have experienced, and how that kind of shift can fuel a desire to prove yourself.

I also reflected on my early days in entertainment, remembering what striving for opportunities and recognition felt like. I channeled that energy into Dami’s relentless pursuit of fame. Then, there was the physicality of the role. Dami is loud, extra and dramatic, so I had to be intentional about my body language and how he moves, speaks and reacts to things.

Overall, the prep was about balancing what I naturally understood about him and what I had to stretch myself to become. It was a challenge that made playing him even more exciting.

The character is admittedly within your age bracket, but were there any difficulties you had connecting to him and relating to some of his struggles?

Dami and I have distinct personalities, but we have had similar experiences and struggles. I deeply relate to his struggle to gain recognition, find a platform, and establish himself. When I first started in entertainment as a performing percussionist, I faced similar challenges later in my early acting days—trying to prove myself, be seen and navigate the uncertainties that come with pursuing a creative career. Even his dynamic with his older brother resonated with me because I also have just one older brother, and growing up, we had our fair share of rifts.

But where we differ is in personality. Dami is loud, extra, over-the-top and thrives on drama and attention. I, on the other hand, take a more laid-back, reserved approach to these things. He lives for social media validation and the glitz of his newfound fame, whereas my relationship with those things is quite different. I value the work, not just the noise around it. So, while I understood his journey, stepping into his shoes meant embracing a personality quite different from mine, which was fun and challenging as an actor.

What was the highlight of working on this project for you?

The highlight of working on this project was definitely the opportunity to headline the show and bring Dami to life. Leading a project like this comes with a lot of responsibility, one I was glad to take on. Beyond that, working with the cast and crew was another major highlight. There’s something special about being surrounded by a team with the best collaborative energy. A team that’s just as invested in telling the story as you are.

A key attorney from Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal team has filed to withdraw from the mogul’s federal sex trafficking case just months ahead of his trial. According to TMZ, attorney Anthony Ricco submitted a motion on February 21, 2025, to the Southern District of New York federal court, stating he could no longer “effectively serve as counsel” for Combs due to reasons that were not specified. ROME — Pope Francis, 88, was in critical condition Saturday after suffering a long asthmatic respiratory crisis that required high flows of oxygen, the Vatican said. The pontiff had been hospitalized for a week with a complex lung infection and had received blood transfusions after tests indicated a condition associated with anemia, according to the Vatican’s late update.

“The Holy Father continues to be alert and spent the day in an armchair although in more pain than yesterday. At the moment the prognosis is reserved,” the statement said.

Over the past several days, medical professionals closely monitored the pope’s condition. Earlier updates revealed that Francis was battling pneumonia and a complex respiratory infection that kept him hospitalized, with doctors warning that his fragile state could quickly deteriorate. Despite a brief period in which he reportedly slept well overnight, his overall condition remained precarious.

The Vatican continued its Holy Year celebrations on Saturday without the presence of the pontiff, a clear indication of the gravity of the situation. In a bid to maintain a sense of normalcy during the once-every-quarter-century celebration of Catholicism, church officials adapted their schedules; however, the absence of Pope Francis was deeply felt by many.

Doctors had long cautioned that the onset of sepsis—the dangerous infection of the blood—posed the greatest threat to Francis. Although, as of Friday, there was no evidence of sepsis and the pope was responding to various treatments, his condition was described as touch-and-go by his medical team.

“He is not out of danger,” said his personal physician, Dr. Luigi Carbone. “So like all fragile patients I say they are always on the golden scale: In other words, it takes very little to become unbalanced.”

Pope Francis, who had long suffered from chronic lung disease, was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic on February 14 after a bout of bronchitis worsened into a complex viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory tract infection, eventually leading to pneumonia in both lungs. His doctors prescribed “absolute rest” and a combination of cortisone, antibiotics, and supplemental oxygen.

Carbone, along with the pope’s personal nurse Massimiliano Strappetti, had organized care for Francis even before his hospitalization, with the pontiff insisting on remaining at the Vatican to continue his work, “because of institutional and private commitments.” In addition to his personal medical team, he was attended by a cardiologist and an infectious disease specialist.

Dr. Sergio Alfieri, head of medicine and surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, expressed grave concerns over the potential complications. He emphasized that the primary danger was the possibility of germs from the respiratory system entering the bloodstream and triggering sepsis—a condition that can rapidly lead to organ failure and death.

“Sepsis, with his respiratory problems and his age, would be really difficult to get out of,” Alfieri told a news conference Friday at Gemelli. “The English say ‘knock on wood,’ we say ‘touch iron.’ Everyone touch what they want,” he said as he tapped the microphone. “But this is the real risk in these cases: that these germs pass to the bloodstream.”

“He knows he’s in danger,” Alfieri added. “And he told us to relay that.”

At the Vatican, deacons and other church officials had gathered for a special Jubilee weekend. Originally, Pope Francis was expected to preside over the celebration of deacons—a ministry that precedes ordination to the priesthood. In his stead, a substitute was arranged to lead Sunday’s Mass, as Francis had already been absent from his traditional Sunday noon blessing for the second consecutive weekend due to his declining health.

Deacon Luis Arnaldo Lopez Quirindongo from Ponce, Puerto Rico, who was present at the Vatican during the Jubilee celebration, offered words of comfort and resilience amidst the somber atmosphere.

“Look, even though he’s not (physically) here, we know he’s here,” said Luis Arnaldo Lopez Quirindongo. “He’s recovering, but he’s in our hearts and is accompanying us because our prayers and his go together.”

As the global community absorbs the news of Pope Francis’s passing, many are left reflecting on his decades-long legacy and the profound impact he had on millions around the world. His efforts to promote compassion, inclusivity, and interfaith dialogue resonated far beyond the confines of the Catholic Church. Doctors have indicated that his recovery would have taken considerable time, even had he overcome the infection, as he was destined to live with chronic respiratory challenges for the rest of his life. The loss of Pope Francis marks the end of an era for the Catholic Church, as well as for a global community that looked to him for inspiration and leadership.

“He has to get over this infection and we all hope he gets over it,” said Alfieri. “But the fact is, all doors are open.”

In the wake of this monumental loss, tributes and condolences continue to pour in from around the world. As the Catholic Church and the faithful mourn the passing of a transformative figure, many are already looking ahead to the future leadership that will carry forward his vision of unity and love.
