Twelve years of marriage does not happen by accident, and Gabrielle Union wants you to know it. On August 30, she and Dwyane Wade marked their 12th wedding anniversary, and instead of another glossy highlight reel, Union gave you something realer. “In this life, we have learned the lesson of celebrating what we DO have,” she wrote in her anniversary caption. It sets the tone for everything that came after in that post, and honestly, for their whole marriage.
This is not a couple who found each other and coasted. Gabrielle Union and Wade met in 2007 at a Super Bowl party, started dating in 2009, and did not go public until 2010. They broke up briefly in 2013 over distance and scheduling before finding their way back. Union has said the two laugh their way through everything, telling PEOPLE earlier this year, “We laugh our asses off. At all times, we laugh.” That sounds simple, but for a couple who has survived what these two have survived, it means something.
Here is the part most people forget or choose to skip. Before the wedding, while Union and Wade were on a break, Wade fathered a child with another woman, Aja Metoyer. Union later wrote in her memoir that finding out about the pregnancy devastated her in ways she still struggles to put into words, even after years of therapy. Wade has since admitted that confessing that moment to Union was harder than losing an NBA Finals game. He credits her for staying through it, crediting her strength in getting him through one of the roughest stretches of his life.
Then came the fight to build their own family. Union spent years chasing a pregnancy that never held. She endured somewhere between eight and nine miscarriages, later tracing the cause to adenomyosis, a painful uterine condition. She has been blunt about what that did to her sense of self. “It felt like failure. My body failed,” she said, describing the moment she accepted surrogacy as her only path forward. She once wanted the experience of carrying a child herself. “I wanted the experience of being pregnant,” she admitted, before turning to a gestational carrier who helped bring her daughter Kaavia into the world in 2018.
None of this erases the good years. It explains them. A marriage that has weathered infidelity, grief, illness, and years of fertility loss and still shows up laughing on Instagram every August is not luck. It is work, therapy, forgiveness, and a decision the two of them keep making on purpose. Union captured that exact idea in her anniversary post when she talked about learning to celebrate life after facing death, celebrating health after surviving illness, and celebrating growth after every hard season.
If you are watching this marriage from the outside and wondering how two people stay together through betrayal and loss this heavy, the answer Union keeps giving you is not romantic in the movie sense. It is grounded. It is choosing your person again after the worst day, then again after the next one. Twelve years in, that is still the blueprint Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade are running on, and they are not pretending it came easy.
Kaavia is seven now. Wade’s older kids, Zaire, Zaya, and Xavier, along with his nephew Dahveon, round out a blended family that took real effort to build. Their story is proof that a strong marriage is not the absence of hard chapters. It is what you build after you survive them.
