When Heyward turned his attention to the GRAMMY-winning songstress, he quizzed her on what artists she’d like to complete a joint album with.

“Chris Brown and I did a collaboration on my song ‘How We Roll,’ and I think that the fans really appreciated us coming together and jamming out in the visual. So, I think Cici and Breezy could be super crazy. I also like Bruno Mars,” she relayed.

Longtime fans of the diva know she has a documented history with both superstar vocalists.

For Brown, she’s not only collaborated on stage with him but also rolled to the top of R&B charts with their long-awaited 2023 duet.

With Mars, she joined him as a special guest on the critically acclaimed ‘24K Magic Tour‘ in 2018.

Her most surprising answer, however, may have come courtesy of the mention of a famous rapper.

“You know who else I really love? J. Cole,” she said. “I think J. Cole does so good melodically with records and he always tells a story in such a beautiful and poetic, but hard and dope way. So, I’m going to flip it and say Cici and Cole would be super cool.”

Black Men See Unemployment Increase

A pair of jobs reports for January indicate that despite an otherwise stable job market, employer hiring trends suggest that the economy could be heading for a downturn.

A pair of jobs reports for the month of January indicate that despite an otherwise stable job market, employer hiring trends suggest that the economy could be heading for a downturn as Trump’s proposed tariffs on China, Mexico, and Canada come closer to becoming a reality.

According to CNBC, unemployment for Black men and Asian Americans increased in January, as did the number of people actively looking for work. Although the overall percentage is modest, Black workers unemployment rate overall ticked higher to 6.2% from the 6.1% rate in December 2024, Black men specifically, saw a significant increase.

The rate for Black men in particular climbed to 6.9 percent in January, up over an entire percentage point from December 2024 when it was at 5.6 percent. Black women, meanwhile, remained steady at their 5.4% unemployment rate from December.

Ellie Gould, a senior economist at the Economic Policy Institute, indicated to the outlet that although the numbers for Black men appear concerning, part of the uptick results from a change in the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics’ survey tools.

Those changes include seasonal adjustment factors, like year-end turnover from companies ahead of the beginning of a new fiscal year, an annual benchmark revision to past payroll data, and the inclusion of new data from the U.S. Census that incorporates labor force characteristics.

“I think you would need to see a few months of that elevation, and not just a blip in the data, to think that there was something sinister going on,” Gould remarked to CNBC. Still, Gould noted, “obviously, just the simple fact that it’s so much higher than other groups is a systemic problem in and of itself.”

Another report, this one from CNN, cited a jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics on Feb. 7, which indicated that the country fell short of its 170,000 jobs estimated to be added in January.

Instead of adding 170,000 jobs, the country only added 143,000 jobs and although the indication from various economists was that the economy is expected to remain stable enough to support a pull back from the Fed’s anti-inflation measures, some companies are beginning to hire as though they are already in a recession.

According to Oliver Allen, a senior U.S. economist at Pantheon Microeconomics, “That leaves us in a situation where things can essentially flip quite quickly, because you’ve already got companies hiring as if they’re in a recession — even if they’re not laying people off.”

As Michelle Holder, an associate professor of economics at John Jay College at the City University of New York, told CNN, Trump’s proposed tariffs could have the effect of eroding historic gains made by Black workers, women, Latinx workers, and other underrepresented workers in the American labor force.

“Tariffs raise prices on goods and services, and when that occurs, people will buy less, and they will spend less,” Holder said. “The data, the trends are pretty crystal clear during economic downturns, during periods when [spending] declines, spending decreases in sectors where Black and Brown people are well represented.”

Holder continued, noting that Black workers in particular, are overrepresented among federal workers, saying that Trump’s cutting of federal workers would be disastrous for them.

“Those groups that were able to participate in the growth in the economy after we were brought back from the brink after the pandemic, I think those times are over. I don’t think that the pictures for those groups get rosier,” Holder said.

5 Books to Read During Black History Month

Since 1976, every February has marked the start of Black History Month. The month is celebrated throughout the United States, and it recognizes Black Americans’ vital role in the country. Literature is just one area of culture that Black Americans have heavily influenced with little recognition. 

Donald Trump has recently made an executive order resulting in the termination of DEI (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion) in the federal workforce. This removal makes it especially important to observe, celebrate and support marginalized groups. From non-fiction to poetry to romance, here is a list of five books from Black authors to read and support this month. 

“Beloved” by Toni Morrison

“Beloved” is a historical fiction written in 1987 by famous American author Toni Morrison. The novel follows Sethe, who was born a slave and escaped to Ohio. Taking place eighteen years after her escape, readers are welcomed into her inner thoughts. She struggles to escape her past and sees reminders of her trauma in every aspect of life. 

The novel has been relevant since its release for its ability to be applied to social injustices. “Beloved” is also banned in many states, specifically in Florida, Colorado and Georgia for its “inappropriate” material. 

“Beloved” is a haunting story filled with sadness, hope and resilience. Readers should be aware of the dark and disturbing subject matter before reading. 

“Seven Days in June” by Tia Williams

“Seven Days In June,” released in 2021, is the newest novel on this list. This romance follows Shane and Eva who were with one another for one week in June as teenagers and reconnected at a literary event years later. The two begin a relationship again and learn to grow together and embrace their differences. 

The pair have rich backstories giving them depths that tend to lack in some romances. The novel’s substance makes for a rewarding, yet lighthearted and pleasant read. Above all “Seven Days In June” is a story of forgiveness and second chances. 

“Giovanni’s Room” by James Baldwin

James Baldwin was an author and civil rights activist, most known for his essays and novels. “Giovanni’s Room” was released in 1956 and follows an American man David, who has just moved to Paris. There, he meets Giovanni and the two men begin a relationship with one another. 

Baldwin, being an openly gay man himself, brings a uniquely raw and genuine perspective to the novel. “Giovanni’s Room” discovers heavy themes such as self-discovery, shame and human nature. More than anything this novel is a social commentary about queerness and the shame that David feels. At only 178 pages, “Giovanni’s Room” is a quick but dark read. 

“Citizen: An American Lyric” by Claudia Rankine

For fans of poetry, “Citizen: An American Lyric” is a great option. Released in 2014, Claudia Rankine’s book discusses issues with racism, police brutality and race in the 21st century. Rankine discusses notable black individuals like Serena Williams and uses images alongside her writing, making both the form and content an immersive experience. 

One of five books of poetry Rankine has published, “Citizen” argues that as citizens of the world, we all must speak up and fight against injustice. “Citizen: An American Lyric” mirrors the current political and social climate in the United States, making it important to read and understand more than ever before. 

“I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou was one of the most notable authors of her generation, known for both her writing and civil rights activism. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings” is an autobiography that details Angelou’s early life and the challenges she faced as a Black woman in America. The main message is that kindness and empathy take precedence over everything. 

Angelou’s persuasive and powerful written voice invokes real thoughts and urges for action to come from reading her works. “I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings,” just one of the several works from her lifetime, is a classic and speaks about valuable lessons that everyone can learn from.

Attorney Tony Buzbee drops lawsuit against Jay-Z and Diddy

Attorney Tony Buzbee has voluntarily dismissed the lawsuit filed in October 2024, which accused music moguls Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of assaulting a 13-year-old girl at a 2000 afterparty. The lawsuit, brought under the pseudonym “Jane Doe” for the anonymous plaintiff, claimed both Jay-Z and Combs were involved in the alleged assault.

Both defendants strongly denied the accusations, with Jay-Z filing a motion to dismiss the case and requesting that the plaintiff’s true identity be revealed. Following these legal motions and proceedings, Buzbee’s decision to voluntarily dismiss the lawsuit brings an end to this specific legal action against the two moguls.

While the reasons for the dismissal remain unclear, the move effectively concludes this chapter of legal disputes involving Jay-Z and Diddy.

Natasha Rothwell Calls ‘How to Die Alone’ Cancellation a ‘Shock’, Fans React with Anger

Natasha Rothwell says she’s ‘baffled” about the cancellation of How to Die Alone, the Hulu sitcom she starred in and created at Hulu. The actress and writer, who had a breakthrough role as Kelli in Insecure and won critical acclaim for her appearance in The White Lotus, brought the project to Onyx Collective in 2022, and it started airing on Hulu in 2024.

But after one season, Hulu pulled the plug on the show which starred Rothwell as Mel, an employee at JFK Airport who nevertheless had never been on a flight.

Understandably, Rothwell wonders why the show had such a short lifespan. How to Die Alone won an Independent Spirit Award for Ensemble Cast in a New Scripted Series and is up for three NAACP Image Awards.

“I am shocked, heartbroken, and frankly, baffled that Onyx has decided not to move forward with a second season of How to Die Alone, Rothwell said in an official statement. “This is a tough reality to accept because the show is an undeniable critical, creative, and award-winning success. This show took me eight years to bring to life, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned in that time, it’s resilience. I’m not giving up. My team and I are committed to finding How to Die Alone a new home because stories like this matter.”

She added, “Now more than ever, television that amplifies previously unheard voices, and that prioritizes hiring and casting decisions that accurately reflect the diversity of the world, is essential. Representation isn’t just about visibility — it’s about ensuring that our stories, our existence, and our cultural contributions are not erased.”

Onyx Collective was created by Disney in 2021 to bring more content from BIPOC creators to its platforms. They are behind both the Oscar-winning Summer of Soul documentary, directed and produced by Questlove, and the Sly Stone doc, also directed by Quest, which is coming out later this year.

Reasonable Doubt, starring Emazatzy Corinealdi, is an Onyx Collective show currently in its second season. Two of their other projects – Unprisoned with Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo and The Other Black Girl, based on the book of the same title, were canceled as well.

Rothwell will be seen in the third season of The White Lotus, returning to HBO on February 16. She says she’ll be shopping How to Die Alone to another network.

Allison Holker’s Family Speaks Out Against Her Memoir

The family of the late Stephen ‘tWitch’ Boss is speaking out against his widow, Allison Holker, following the release of her memoir ‘This Far: My Story of Love, Loss, and Embracing the Light’.

Holker’s book reveals personal details about tWitch’s struggles, but in an interview with Gayle King on ‘CBS Mornings’ his family says they were blindsided.

His mother, Connie Boss Alexander, criticized how the book was promoted, while his brother, Dre Rose, questioned whether Holker “cherry-picked” from tWitch’s journals.

During the interview, the ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ alum’s mother voiced her frustration, stating:

“I think people deserve the ability to share their story. I get that. But how it was presented and how it was on a cover of a magazine and there was a public, you know, launch or campaign about it, we shouldn’t have to find out about that in the media. We’re a family.”

Rose also expressed interest in wanting to gain insight into his brother’s thoughts and feelings, he told King:

“I would love to see all the journals in all of [their] entirety.”

The rift between Holker and her late husband’s family has been ongoing since tWitch’s untimely death by suicide in 2022. His family accused Holker of imposing nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) on family members during his funeral, further fueling tensions.

Despite the backlash, Holker insists her book was meant to help others, with proceeds going to a mental health foundation in tWitch’s honor.

However, the Boss family calls for a more respectful and inclusive approach. Indeed, Alexander took to her Instagram last month amidst information regarding her son coming out stating:

“The recent publications spreading untruths about Stephen have crossed every line of decency. As his mother, I will not let these accusations go unanswered. We will not stand by while his name and legacy are tarnished. He doesn’t deserve this, and the kids don’t deserve this.”
