How Africans in the US Can Navigate Trump’s Immigration Policies to Protect Their Rights

The Trump administration has swiftly enacted a series of immigration measures that significantly impact both undocumented and legal migrants, including African immigrants in the United States. From expedited deportations to the suspension of refugee admissions, these measures have created a climate of uncertainty and heightened risks for immigrants who are visa holders, asylum seekers, and those with temporary legal status. Understanding these changes and taking proactive steps to protect one’s legal status is more critical than ever.

Key immigration changes affecting African migrants

Increased deportations and ICE raids

  • Expedited removals now apply nationwide, allowing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain and deport undocumented immigrants unable to prove two years of U.S. residency — without a hearing. Previously, this rule was limited to within 100 miles of the U.S. border.
  • ICE raids have intensified, including in churches, schools, hospitals and workplaces, as previous protections for “sensitive locations” have been removed.
  • Local law enforcement is now empowered to cooperate with ICE, increasing the risk of deportation from routine police encounters.
  • Sanctuary city protections are being revoked, putting African migrants in places like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles at higher risk.

Stricter visa and legal immigration processes

  • More background checks and vetting requirements mean that African migrants applying for student, work, or family-based visas will face longer processing times and a higher likelihood of rejection.
  • The Trump administration has ordered a halt to refugee admissions, stranding thousands of approved refugees, particularly those from Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Eritrea.
  • Humanitarian parole programs, which previously allowed some nationals from aforementioned crisis-stricken countries to enter the U.S. legally, have been discontinued.

Changes to birthright citizenship and immigration status tracking

  • The administration has attempted to limit birthright citizenship, arguing that children born to non-citizens may not automatically receive U.S. citizenship. While this move was temporarily blocked in federal court on Jan. 23, 2025, it remains a significant concern.
  • Mandatory fingerprinting and registration for all non-citizens could lead to surveillance and heightened enforcement against African immigrants.
  • New executive orders, such as the directive to audit and freeze funding for NGOs assisting undocumented immigrants, have restricted funding to organizations providing legal support services.

How African migrants can protect themselves

Know your rights during an ICE or police encounter:

  • You have the right to remain silent. If ICE or police officers ask about your immigration status, you do not have to answer.
  • Do not open your door if ICE comes to your home. Ask them to slide a court-issued warrant under the door. Deportation orders do NOT give them the right to enter, only arrest warrants.
  • If ICE forces entry, say out loud that you do NOT consent to a search and remain silent.
  • Do not sign any documents without a lawyer present. Signing could mean agreeing to voluntary deportation.
  • If stopped on the street, stay calm, do not run, and do not answer questions about your immigration status. You have the right to remain silent. If law enforcement asks to search you, you have the right to refuse unless they have probable cause.
  • Keep a written copy of important phone numbers, including close friends, family, and legal aid contacts, in case your phone is confiscated.
  • Carry a “Know Your Rights” card (available from immigrant advocacy groups) to hand to officers if questioned. This can be especially useful for non-English speakers.

If ICE targets you despite having legal status

  • Even if you have legal status (full citizenship, Green Card, work permit, or visa), ICE may still detain or question you due to mistaken identity, errors in immigration databases, racial profiling, or increased enforcement driven by arrest quotas.
  • Always carry proof of your status, such as a Green Card, passport, work permit, or visa. Keep a digital copy stored securely.
  • Do not sign anything without a lawyer. ICE officers may pressure individuals — including those with legal status — into signing voluntary departure forms, which can forfeit legal protections and, in some cases, result in deportation.
  • Ask, “Am I being detained, or am I free to go?” If you are not under arrest, you have the right to leave. Walk away calmly.
  • Contact an immigration lawyer immediately if detained. Do not answer questions or provide additional documents until you have legal representation.

Protecting yourself at work, church and school

  • If ICE raids your workplace, you are not required to disclose your immigration status. If detained, ask to speak to a lawyer immediately.
  • Some churches and community centers may still offer sanctuary programs. Look for local groups providing legal aid and emergency support, but be aware that funding cuts may impact services.
  • Schools and colleges cannot share student information with immigration authorities without a court order due to federal privacy laws. However, under new executive orders, ICE can now conduct enforcement actions on campuses, including detaining individuals in public areas. If you are a student or have children in school, ensure staff understand these protections and how to respond if ICE agents arrive.

Legal resources and support for African migrants

  • Contact immigration advocacy groups such as the African Communities Together and the American Immigration Council for legal guidance.
  • If facing deportation, request a Credible Fear Interview (CFI) or Reasonable Fear Interview (RFI) if you are seeking asylum. Do not sign any voluntary departure documents.
  • Some cities and states offer free legal representation for immigrants in deportation proceedings — check local resources, such as immigrant rights organizations or public defender programs, for assistance in your area.
  • If you fear an immediate risk of deportation, create an emergency plan with your family, including childcare arrangements and financial protections.

Staying informed and engaged

  • Follow trusted sources for immigration news, such as the American Immigration Lawyers Association, the National Immigration Law Center, and the Black Alliance for Just Immigration.
  • Avoid spreading unverified reports of ICE activity on social media, as misinformation can cause unnecessary panic.
  • Join local immigrant mutual aid networks, which can provide financial, legal and community support.
  • Advocate for immigrant protections, including state and local sanctuary policies, by working with immigrant rights organizations or trusted community groups when contacting elected officials to minimize risk.

Kanye West has Taylor Swift on his mind heading into music’s biggest night … which could be an ominous sign for Sunday night’s Grammys, or it’s just a masterful troll.

As of Saturday night, Ye’s Instagram account had unfollowed everyone — including his wife Bianca Censori — with the exception of Taylor. Of course, if you’re Taylor, that move coming on the eve of the Grammys could make you pretty uneasy … considering Tay and Ye’s infamous history at award shows.

For what it’s worth, Taylor and Beyoncé will both be at Crypto.com arena Sunday night — Taylor has 6 nominations and Bey’s up for 11 — so, Ye could be the wild card once again.

It’s unclear if he’ll be in the building, but he is nominated for Best Rap Song.

Over on his X account, Ye went off overnight about a lot of people and subjects — dropping posts about Kamala Harris, President Trump, Elon Musk, The Weeknd‘s new album, Democrats and MAGA hats.

The recent actions against TikTok offer a glimpse into how easily governments can restrict digital platforms. In January 2025, the U.S. government enacted a nationwide ban on TikTok, citing national security risks. This decision disrupted millions of users, particularly young audiences and content creators who relied on the platform for entertainment and income. Canada has not been far behind in taking similar measures. In November 2024, a federal ban was placed on TikTok’s Canadian operations, leaving creators and users uncertain about the app’s future in the country. Many saw this as a sign that digital platforms could become political battlegrounds, where access is determined by shifting policies rather than user demand.

The Online News Act and Its Wider Implications

Canada’s Online News Act (Bill C-18), which took effect in June 2023, added another layer to the discussion on internet access. The law requires digital platforms to compensate Canadian news outlets when their content is shared. In response, companies like Meta (formerly Facebook) opted to restrict news content availability in Canada rather than comply with the new regulation. This meant that Canadians were suddenly unable to access news articles on platforms like Facebook and Instagram.

While the intent of Bill C-18 was to support struggling news organizations, its consequences revealed how easily a government policy could cut Canadians off from essential content. Many worry that a similar approach could be used to limit access to U.S. entertainment, websites, or even entire social media platforms in the future.

The Unspoken Risks of a Reverse Ban

While Canada has faced restrictions from foreign tech giants, the possibility of the U.S. limiting access for Canadians to its platforms is not far-fetched. If relations between the two countries sour, Canada could find itself on the receiving end of digital roadblocks. American platforms like Google, YouTube, and Instagram could impose restrictions on Canadian users, particularly in response to new regulations or trade disputes.

A precedent for such actions already exists. The United States has previously limited access to services and platforms in certain regions for geopolitical reasons. If political tensions escalate, Canadian users could suddenly find themselves locked out of U.S.-based content, a reality that few have seriously considered.

Corporate Influence and Political Power

These connections mean that policy decisions on internet access and content availability are often driven by political and corporate interests rather than public demand.

If U.S. tech giants decide to align themselves with certain political agendas, they could impose restrictions on Canadian users as a way to exert pressure on the Canadian government. This raises the alarming question: Could Canada be digitally isolated from American platforms due to corporate and political maneuvering?

The Potential Future of Internet Access in Canada

While there are currently no widespread restrictions blocking Canadians from U.S. content, the patterns emerging in recent years indicate that such measures are not impossible. The bans on TikTok, the removal of news from social media in Canada, and the increasing willingness of corporations to limit access based on government policies all point to a future where digital borders become more rigid.

Canadians have long enjoyed access to a wealth of U.S. entertainment and news, but the fragility of that access is becoming clearer. If tech giants decide to limit Canadian users or if further government regulations drive platforms to restrict services, the open internet that many take for granted could shrink dramatically.

The conversation around internet freedom is no longer just about censorship in authoritarian states. It is a reality that even democratic countries like Canada must confront. As digital platforms become more entwined with political interests, Canadians must stay informed and vocal about their right to an open and unrestricted internet. The question is no longer whether restrictions could happen, but how soon they might arrive.

What’s Next for Canadians?

With internet freedom in North America at stake, Canadians need to ask: How much control should governments and corporations have over our digital spaces?

Sources with direct knowledge tell BlkCosmo … the judge has authorized private security to accompany Wendy from NYC to Miami, where her dad will be celebrating with friends and family. Wendy will be there for 2 days and then fly back to NY … where she is confined in a studio apartment at an assisted living facility.

BlkCosmo has interviewed Wendy for a new Tubi documentary — “Saving Wendy” — and in it, we raise serious questions about why she is still in a guardianship that gives her virtually no freedom. She calls her apartment a “luxury prison,” where she rarely gets to breathe fresh air, has no internet access, and virtually no visitors … no one can even call her.

We’ve also learned the judge is prohibiting Wendy from having any further contact with the media.

Tristan Thompson is facing some heat for referring to ex-girlfriend Khloe Kardashian‘s niece Dream as his “oldest daughter” … especially from the little one’s mama, Blac Chyna.

ICYMI … the NBA player caught some flak on social media after he filmed himself sending love to his “2 daughters,” Dream Kardashian and True Thompson.

Many online felt it was inappropriate of Tristan to claim Rob Kardashian‘s daughter as his own, especially since he isn’t blood-related to the 8-year-old, and is NOT dating Dream’s aunt.

Blac Chyna, who welcomed Dream with ex-fiancé Rob in November 2016, expressed a similar sentiment … accusing TT of bringing up her daughter’s name for clout.

She wrote on Instagram … “Dream has one mother, Angela White, and one father, Robert Kardashian. I usually don’t speak up, but I’m done. Stop all this clout chasing involving my daughter.”

Chyna made it clear there was no reason for Tristan to lay claim to Dream, as she and Rob are active parents in Dream’s life.

She added … “We also have a beautiful, healthy co-parenting relationship.”

But it’s no secret Dream has an incredibly close bond with Khloe and True, regularly spending time at “The Kardashians” star’s home for sleepovers and other family bonding moments … and it isn’t the first time someone in their family has overstepped in describing their relationship

Khloe famously put her foot in her mouth when she referred to herself as Dream’s “third parent” on a 2023 episode of “The Kardashians” … sparking a similar backlash to Tristan’s.

Khloe later backtracked her remark on Instagram, explaining she considers “all of my nieces and nephews my babies” as she believes it takes a village to raise kids.

Though, given Chyna’s complicated history with the Kardashian-Jenner family, it may be safer to stick to their actual “aunt” and “uncle” titles moving forward.

The GRAMMY Awards 2025 takes place tomorrow (February 2) and will unite many of music’s biggest superstars. However, Andre 3000 has announced that he won’t be one of them.

Nominated in earnest for his flute LP ‘New Blue Sun‘ (including a nod for Album of the Year), both Andre and the project were expected to be spotlighted in earnest at the ceremony.

Moments ago, the OutKast star announced that he won’t be at Music’s Biggest Night. 3 Stacks did not provide a reason why.

Nonetheless, he wrote:

“Unfortunately, I’m not able to attend the GRAMMYs tomorrow but some of the New Blue Sun musicians, friends and supporters will be in attendance. Our album was conceived and recorded in Los Angeles with the spirit of openness and creative collaboration. We hope that the rebound of Los Angeles is swift and renewing.Congrats to all the musicians and collaborators being acknowledged. Keep playing.– A. 3000″

Conor McGregor’s N-Word Rant Sparks Debate

There’s not too much left to be said that hasn’t already been made into a debate over the span of decades, generations even, when it comes to using the racial epithet nig— well, let’s just say “The N-Word.”

Although it’s regarded as an unspoken rule that Black people are the sole proprietors to now using it as a “term of endearment,” some believe we need to completely rid ourselves when it comes to adapting one of America’s most derogatory words into everyday vocabulary. However, one thing we’ve all come to agree on is that no white person should ever find themselves using it for any reason. Case closed.

…or is it? You might actually be surprised at the amount of white men who’ve tested that theory in recent times. The latest was Irish boxer Conor McGregor, who earlier today (January 31) went on a N-word-laced rant against former UFC Lightweight Champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“Show yo wife nigga. Show yo kids nigga,” McGregor brazenly writes, following up with even more hateful language by adding amongst other things, “Cousin fuckin motherfuckin hidin motherfucker. Show us you and your cousins kids together because we have kids here in Ireland that wanna smoke them in competition.”

McGregor’s tirade (seen above) came in response to a whole other match between much younger fighters Paul Hughes and undefeated PFL lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov. Hughes, also hailing from Ireland, made a note to separate himself from any comparisons to Conor in leaked footage (seen below) by stating, “I’m not like this other guy; I’m my own man,” making it clear that he’s not one to trash-talk if things don’t go his way. Like clockwork, the 36-year-old MMA legend hopped on social media to go off on Hughes, referring to him as an “arse licker” among other filthy jabs. After Khabib, a trainer and relative of Usman Nurmagomedov, sided with Hughes by writing on his Instagram Stories, “You are a real Irishman [Hughes] and not a rapist and drug addict like this bastard,” McGregor turned his sights on attacking the man who defeated him by submission back in 2018 at UFC 229.

Here’s where the initial debate comes into play. As you might’ve guessed by now, there are zero Black people and/or anyone of African heritage involved in the aforementioned back-and-forth. So, what’s with the N-word use? Going back to that “term of endearment” argument, some will argue that Conor McGregor more or less was using the N-word in general terms — a substitute for “bro,” “man” and/or “guy,” if you will. Although not as racially sensitive, many women in comparison have similarly adapted the word “bitch” into a term of endearment that can relate to any female of any race without the derogatory connotations. In a sense, Conor refers to Khabib as the N-Word in the same way he might say to any friend or associate regardless of their race.

Does that make it any better though? Take country star Morgan Wallen as an example, who almost four years ago to the day found himself in hot water when he was recorded drunkenly-yet-playfully shouting to one of his white friends, “take care of this pussy-ass nigga.” A few Black country stars even came to his defense, with Kane Brown telling The New York Times, “I knew that he didn’t mean it in the way that the world thought that he meant it” and Jimmie Allen assuring podcaster Bobby Bones that “[Morgan] didn’t use the -er.”

So, soft “a” makes it all ok? How about when pop prince Justin Bieber infamously remixed his song “One Less Lonely Girl” into “One Less Lonely Nigger” when he was 15. Young Money CEO Mack Maine jumped to his defense when it originally went viral, telling BlkCosmo, “Bieber does not have a slave mentality.” Word has it, Biebz even received an alleged “Black history lesson” from mentor Usher with videos to educate him on why that word is so offensive.

Hey, whatever protects the investment…

Overall, we stand with the NAACP on their views when it comes to any use of the N-word, in which they boldly state, “the N-word is too often freely and casually used by some individuals in popular media, literature, and general society with usage broadened across racial and generational backgrounds; and whereas, the stigma of this word embodies and invokes painful memories and inhumane ill-will; and countless individuals including NAACP freedom fighters, have lost their lives due to the beliefs perpetuated by the use of this word.” Their way of thinking is reflected in the coveted NAACP Image Awards as well, also adding, “the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People shall not condone, award, or engage any person that uses the N-word in any capacity, or in any artistic endeavor that does not allude to the historical context of the word, or that does not highlight the prejudicial nature of the word.”

Tems Cancels Rwanda Concert Amid Regional Tensions

Fans and critics are divided over Grammy-winning singer Tems‘ decision to cancel her March 22 concert in Kigali, Rwanda, after acknowledging she was unaware of the country’s alleged involvement in theDemocratic Republic of Congo (DRC) crisis.

“You’re a true Pan-Africanist @temsbaby, and today you earned a new fan,” praised one X user, while others called for the Nigerian artist to perform in DRC instead. “Come to the DRC, and we’ll help you organize a concert that will bring you twice the amount!” wrote another supporter.

However, others were not buying it, “There’s no way she didn’t know,” one user said. They questioned her initial lack of awareness about the regional conflict. “You’re a well-established artist who has an entire team working with/for you, and not a single one is abreast [of] current global news?” another asked.

Some Rwandan fans expressed disappointment, with one demanding ticket reimbursements: “That apology is wasted. You know nothing about real-world issues.”

In her statement on X on Thursday, January 30, Tems apologized for any insensitivity: “I recently promoted my show in Rwanda without realizing that there is an ongoing conflict between Rwanda and Congo. I never ever intend to be insensitive to real-world issues.”

The cancellation comes amidescalating tensions in eastern DRC, where the M23 rebel group has intensified its insurgency, capturing key locations, including Goma. The DRC government and international observers accuse Rwanda of supporting M23 rebels, claims Rwanda denies. UN reportsindicate 237,000 people were displaced this month alone.

Meanwhile, attention has turned to American singer John Legend‘s scheduled February 21 performance in Kigali, part of Global Citizen’s Move Afrika tour. The event aims to promote economic growth and entrepreneurship in Africa through music.

Critics are urging Legend to follow Tems’ lead, withone popular tweet reading: “Dear @johnlegend, you can’t be a global citizen and endorse genocidal governments.”

As of now, there has been no indication that John Legend plans to cancel his performance. However, the situation remains fluid, and public opinion may influence future decisions.
