The James Bond franchise is entering a new era. Amazon MGM Studios has announced a joint venture with longtime 007 producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to take creative control of the spy series. This marks a major shift for the 60-year-old franchise following Amazon’s $8.5 billion acquisition of MGM in 2022.

Amazon now holds the rights to distribute and develop future Bond films, while Wilson and Broccoli remain co-owners. However, both producers have decided to step back, with Wilson retiring and Broccoli shifting focus to other projects.

The Future of Bond Under Amazon

Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, expressed gratitude to Wilson and Broccoli, stating:

“We are honored to continue this treasured heritage and look forward to ushering in the next phase of the legendary 007 for audiences around the world.”

Wilson added that he was stepping back from producing to pursue art and charitable ventures. Broccoli echoed the sentiment, reflecting on her dedication to the franchise and her excitement for the future.

With this transition, the biggest question remains: Who will be the next James Bond?

The Search for the Next 007

Following Daniel Craig’s departure after 2021’s No Time to Die, Amazon has yet to announce casting plans for Bond 26. However, speculation is at an all-time high. Jeff Bezos himself asked his followers on X who they would pick as the next 007, sparking heated discussions. According to the BBC, some of the most popular responses included:

  • Henry Cavill
  • Tom Hardy
  • Idris Elba
  • Aaron Taylor-Johnson

Each of these actors has been linked to the role in various rumors, but no official confirmation has been made.

Will Amazon Fumble Bond?

Not everyone is thrilled about Amazon’s takeover of 007. Critics, including New York Post’s Johnny Oleksinki, worry that Amazon will mishandle the franchise the same way it did with The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power—a high-budget series that failed to capture the public’s imagination.

“Amazon’s show barely registers, wins no major awards, and is a cheap-looking snooze with a declining viewership.”

With No Time to Die grossing $774 million at the global box office, expectations for the next Bond film are sky-high. Can Amazon deliver, or will 007’s future be compromised?
