NFL’s First Transgender Cheerleader Justine Lindsay Alleges Carolina Panthers TopCats Fired Her Due To Transphobia

Get ready, y’all, because Justine Lindsay, the NFL’s trailblazing first transgender cheerleader, is speaking out. She’s dropping some serious claims, alleging the Carolina Panthers gave her the boot because of transphobia. She even connects it to the political climate after Donald Trump became president and started his attack on the trans community.Back in March 2022, Justine Lindsay made major waves. She was hitting the field, shaking her pom-poms with the North Carolina Panthers TopCats, making history as the NFL’s very first transgender cheerleader. She truly broke barriers as the league’s first transgender woman to cheer.

Her presence on the field definitely stirred up a whole lot of conversation. There was so much love and support, but also a fair share of criticism. It wasn’t just about her, but part of a bigger trending topic: the ongoing debate about transgender women competing in women’s sports at all levels, from college to the Olympics. Folks have been asking some real questions about fair competition and what medical transition requirements should look like.

What’s important to remember is that Lindsay’s gender identity was never a secret. And in her heart, she believed she earned her spot on a team that felt non-gendered and non-competitive.

She cheered for the Panthers for three whole seasons before the team cut her. Fox News reported her departure in August. But Lindsay says the reason is clear: she was fired for being transgender.

Justine Lindsay Speaks Out: Transphobia and Trump’s Policies Behind Her Panthers Exit?

During an Instagram Live with Gaye Magazine on November 14, right in the middle of Transgender Awareness Week, Lindsay didn’t hold back. “I was cut because I’m trans,” she stated firmly. “I don’t wanna hear nobody saying ‘She didn’t wanna come back.’ Why the hell would I not wanna come back to an organization that I’ve been a part of for three years?”

She made it clear she doesn’t hold ill will toward the Panthers or their officials. Still, she feels they missed the bigger picture. “I love them down,” she shared. “I appreciate everything that they’ve done for me, but I feel like I was done wrong.”

Even while insisting she wasn’t throwing shade, she called them out. Lindsay said the decision felt like “a big slap in the face” not just to her, but to the youth. This all happened, she added, “right after Trump became president.”

It’s worth noting that early in his second term, President Trump signed an executive order directly impacting the transgender community. This order bars schools and colleges receiving federal funds (those under Title IX) from allowing men to participate in women’s sports or use women’s locker rooms and restrooms. Disobey, and these institutions could face investigations and lose their funding.
