One of Them Days Is a Love Letter to Regular Black Girls

When R&B star Monica dropped her hit song “Don’t Take It Personal (Just One Of Dem Days)” in 1995, it became an anthem for irritated Black women globally.

Fast forward three decades later, a version of the lyrics is now the title for an outrageous day-in-the-life comedy produced by Issa Rae. One of Them Days follows two very irritated besties, Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA), as they embark on an absurd quest to pay their rent hours before it’s due.

The pair share an apartment in L.A.’s South Central neighborhood of Baldwin Village, which is colloquially referred to as “The Jungle” by locals due to its once palmy, banana-tree covered landscape, and historical reputation for criminal activity. Once Dreux discovers Alyssa handed over their rent money to her unfaithful, broke “entrepreneur” lover, Keshawn, who spent the cash on a line of “Cucci” tees, chaos ensues as Dreux and Alyssa scheme up a plot to make $1,500 in one day.

The movie is stacked with an all-star cast, including Maude Apatow (Bethany) who plays a well-meaning neighborhood colonizer with a dog named Shooter; Abbott Elementary’s Janelle James (Ruby), in the role of an ill-trained blood bank phlebotomist, and Katt Williams (Lucky), who stars as a corner store prophet warning against predatory payday loans. While the film is loaded with ridiculous, slapstick humor, the story about two Black women with no safety nets trying to make ends meet couldn’t be more timely, given the ongoing housing crisis shadowing L.A. county.

Black people represent only eight percent of L.A.’s total population but account for 34 percent of the city’s unhoused residents. Black women are grossly overrepresented in that number, stemming from an array of systemic factors including high-eviction rates, gender-based violence, and ballooning rent prices worsened by gentrification, without the income to offset housing expenses due to racial and gender-based wealth gaps. And natural disasters, like the recent wildfires that have destroyed over 12,000 homes in L.A. and counting, further exacerbate the city’s housing shortage, the brunt of which will be felt by the city’s most vulnerable demographics. Crafting a well-deserved, soft-life future for Black women in L.A. will take continued awareness, creativity, and community allies, which is exactly how Dreux and Alyssa pull off their make-rent-in-one-day stunt.

One of Them Days sparkles in its authentic telling of the power of loyal support between Black women, and that intention shines through in quiet, art-imitating-life choices surrounding the film’s leads. Two-time Emmy winner Palmer, who is a Virgo in real life, rocks a gold-plated Virgo necklace around her neck throughout the film, and four-time Grammy-winning SZA is comfortable in her film debut as a character who believes in positive affirmations and the benevolence of the universe, just like she does off-screen. These subtle winks let the audience in on a secret: There is a Dreux and an Alyssa in all of us.

Rae said in an interview that she knew she wanted One of Them Days to be made from the moment she read screenwriter Syreeta Singleton’s script. Rae and Singleton have worked together on other culturally-shifting projects, including Insecure and Rap Sh!t.

“She writes the best female characters, the best female friendships,” Rae told Geeks of Color. “Given this was set in L.A. and was a buddy comedy I haven’t seen in awhile, I just immediately identified with the characters” she added.

The film’s director, Lawrence Lamont, who also directed four episodes of Rap Sh!t, said when he was making One of Them Days, he was inspired by ’90s Black cinema, like Friday and Baps along with the legendary work of John Singleton. Lamont said his goal in shooting the film in the heart of South Central was to keep the “essence of L.A. alive,” while making sure the world around the characters was universal.

That universal message is one of survival: that amidst the tumble-weaves, ringing sirens, eviction notices, and the relentless hamster-wheel of hustle, there is the magic of alchemy in our shared relationships.

Bestie pairs, like Issa and Molly of Insecure, Mia and Shawna of Rap Sh!t, and Dreux and Alyssa, are now immortalized in the pantheon of Issa Rae-produced media, which showcase fictional Black girls making it by any means necessary—with one another’s love and support.

One of Them Days is now playing in theaters.

Diddy faces potential life in prison, according to Wendy Williams.

The Art of Asking: A Guide to Deeper Connections Through Thoughtful Questions

In today’s fast-paced world of quick chats and surface-level conversations, the ability to foster meaningful connections has become increasingly valuable. At the heart of this skill lies something deceptively simple yet powerful: asking good questions. Not just any questions, but ones that encourage deeper thinking and authentic sharing, leading to stronger relationships both personally and professionally.

Think about the last time you felt truly understood during a conversation. In these moments, it’s often not just what we say, but what we’re asked that makes the difference. The right question can unlock thoughts and feelings we didn’t even know we wanted to share.

The Power of Meaningful Questions

Imagine you’re at a party making small talk. Instead of the usual “How’s work?” someone asks, “What’s been inspiring you lately?” Suddenly, the conversation shifts. You find yourself sharing thoughts about a book that changed your perspective or a recent experience that moved you. The interaction transforms from polite chit-chat to genuine engagement.

This power extends beyond social situations. In professional settings, thoughtful questions can lead to better problem-solving and stronger teams. During brainstorming, rather than asking “Any ideas?” try “What would we do if resources were unlimited?” Questions like these spark creativity and innovation.

Building Deeper Connections

In personal relationships, the right questions create closeness and understanding. Instead of “How was your day?” ask your partner “What was the best moment of your day?” This invites them to share experiences and emotions that might otherwise go unmentioned.

Self-reflection benefits from good questions too. Asking yourself “What am I avoiding?” or “What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?” can lead to valuable insights and positive change.

What makes a question “good”? It’s not just the words, but the intent behind them. The best questions come from genuine curiosity and a desire to understand, not to confirm existing beliefs or direct conversations toward predetermined conclusions.

The Impact of Thoughtful Conversations

Meaningful conversations are investments in our relationships and personal growth. Through them, we develop empathy by understanding others’ experiences and perspectives. When a coworker seems stressed, asking “What’s been the toughest part of your week?” shows care and helps us provide better support.

These deeper exchanges create shared experiences and mutual understanding, moving us beyond surface-level interactions. Consider the difference between discussing weather with a neighbor versus exploring hopes for your community’s future. The latter builds stronger connections and shared purpose.

Research supports this impact on wellbeing. A study in Psychological Science found that people who engage in substantial conversations tend to be happier than those who stick to small talk. The happiest participants had twice as many meaningful conversations and one-third as much small talk as the unhappiest ones.

At work, thoughtful questions drive innovation and problem-solving. A manager transformed her team’s struggling project by asking, “If we were starting this project today, knowing what we know now, what would we do differently?” This fresh perspective led to successful strategy changes.

Creating Better Questions

Crafting powerful questions starts with genuine curiosity. Before asking something, consider what you really want to learn about the person or topic. It’s the difference between asking “How’s the new job?” out of politeness versus “What’s been most surprising about your new role?” from genuine interest.

Open-ended questions invite richer responses. Instead of “Did you enjoy your vacation?” ask “What moment from your trip will you remember most vividly?” This encourages sharing specific experiences and emotions.

Context matters too. Questions appropriate for close friends might be too personal for new acquaintances. Being mindful of relationships and situations helps create comfortable, meaningful exchanges.

The Art of Listening

Good questions are only half the equation. Active listening completes the connection. This means focusing fully on the speaker, understanding their message, and responding thoughtfully. In our distraction-filled world, this skill requires intention and practice.

Active listening involves giving your complete attention. Put away your phone, maintain appropriate eye contact, and use non-verbal cues like nodding to show engagement. These simple actions encourage others to open up and share more deeply.

Another key aspect is providing feedback to ensure understanding. This might involve summarizing what you’ve heard or asking clarifying questions. The goal isn’t to evaluate or judge, but to truly understand the speaker’s perspective and experience.

Overcoming Conversational Challenges

The prospect of deeper conversations can feel intimidating, especially with new people. This anxiety is common – the racing heart, sweaty palms, and fear of saying the wrong thing. However, several strategies can help overcome these barriers.

Preparation helps build confidence. Having a few thoughtful questions in mind can provide a safety net in social situations. This isn’t about scripting conversations but having starting points for meaningful dialogue.

Being kind to yourself is crucial. Everyone has awkward moments, and not every conversation will flow perfectly. Each interaction is a chance to learn and improve, not a test to pass or fail.

Focusing on the other person can help manage social anxiety. When you’re genuinely interested in understanding someone else, self-consciousness often fades naturally. Remember that most people appreciate sincere interest in their thoughts and experiences.

Technology and Modern Communication

Technology has transformed how we connect, creating both opportunities and challenges for meaningful conversation. While digital tools help us stay in touch across distances, they can also create barriers to authentic connection.

Text-based communication lacks the nuance of face-to-face interaction. Without tone, expression, and body language, messages can be misinterpreted. While emojis and GIFs help convey emotion, they can’t fully replace the richness of in-person dialogue.

However, when used mindfully, technology can enhance connections. Video calls can bridge physical distances, allowing for more personal interaction than text alone. The key is using these tools intentionally – choosing the right medium for each conversation and giving it your full attention.

Cultivating a Questioning Mindset

Becoming skilled at fostering deeper connections isn’t just about techniques – it’s about developing a questioning mindset. This means approaching life with genuine curiosity and a desire to understand more deeply.

Start by becoming comfortable with not knowing. Rather than feeling embarrassed about what you don’t know, see it as an opportunity to learn. This shift can transform everyday interactions into discoveries. Question your own assumptions regularly, asking yourself “Why do I think this way?” This practice leads to personal growth and greater openness to others’ perspectives.

Conclusion

The art of asking questions and fostering deeper connections is an ongoing journey. Each conversation offers a chance to practice, learn, and grow. Success isn’t about perfect interactions but about showing up with genuine curiosity and empathy.

Consider the story of a dinner host who asked each guest, “What’s something you’ve changed your mind about recently?” The evening transformed from typical social gathering to meaningful exchange as people shared personal growth stories and perspective shifts. This illustrates how a single thoughtful question can create profound connection.

As you move forward, challenge yourself to ask more meaningful questions and listen more deeply. Be patient with yourself and others – some conversations will flow naturally, while others might feel challenging. That’s part of the process.

In our increasingly divided world, the simple act of asking thoughtful questions and truly listening to answers can be revolutionary. It’s a small step that, when practiced consistently, leads to greater empathy, deeper relationships, and a more connected world.

Remember the power you hold in your questions. Each one is an invitation to understand someone better, to see the world through their eyes, and to create moments of genuine human connection. Your next question might unlock a profound conversation, a new understanding, or even a life-changing relationship.

I moved into a bigger apartment six months ago and have been taking advantage of the extra space by hosting elaborate dinner parties. Although my luxury scented candles and homemade dishes create a great ambience, I’ve been looking to curate the perfect playlist that can be heard throughout my apartment. (The sound on my TV is loud, but not loud enough to be heard in every room). A friend of mine swears by her Google Nest Audio ($68, originally $100) and suggested it as the perfect addition to my hosting arsenal. I’ve been consistently using the small but mighty speaker for four months now and it has completely upgraded my lifestyle in every way.

Main Image

Not only does it play my tunes from YouTube Music, Apple Music, and Spotify, it also lets me cast from other apps as well (more on that later). Ahead, read all about how the easy-to-use smart device has been seamlessly integrated into my home.

About the Google Nest Audio

  • Google Nest Audio is 75 percent louder than the original Google Home.
  • It plays audiobooks, podcasts, music, and news.
  • it’s available in five different colors.
  • There’s a guest mode option to control private information.

What I Like About the Google Nest Audio

I’ve never used a smart home gadget prior to Google Nest Audio. I never saw a need for it in my small space and figured it would be too complicated to program. I’ve been elated to see how easy and quickly the device responds to my voice commands. The voice assistant can pick up my voice regardless of background noise, like my TV playing in the background. Thanks to the Google ecosystem, the Chromecast integration lets you cast from your phone, tablet, or computer straight to the Nest. This has made it so easy for me to pick and choose what I want to hear throughout the day.

I’ve used the Nest to set timers while cooking, check and adjust the inside temperature (I also have my Google Nest Learning Thermostat connected to it), listen to the news, control my light fixtures, and so much more. The Nest is also a minimalist design — just seven inches tall with a pillow-like shape — so it blends perfectly into the background, making it great for entertaining guests as they never quite know where the sound is coming from. I like to conceal mine in my bookshelf or on a countertop to keep it out of the way.

How to Use the Google Nest Audio

To set up the Nest Audio you have to download Google Home. Once you have the app, simply select “set up device” and follow the easy prompts. The entire setup will take no more than five minutes. Once it is activated, you will need to say “Hey Google” before each request. You know the Nest Speaker is listening when four LED lights flash on the front. The top of the device has three touch-sensitive spots. The left and right corners turn the volume up or down, while the middle pauses or plays music (you can also do this via voice).

What to Consider Before Trying the Google Nest Audio

The speaker will not work unless you say “Hey Google” before each command. This is the only way to access the speaker, so you’ll need to avoid “Hi Google,” for example, or a direct command like, “Google, what time is it?”

Where Is the Google Nest Audio Available?

You can get the Google Nest Audio Speaker on the brand’s website, at Best Buy, and Walmart.

Hold Tight To Your Remote Position As Flexibile Jobs Dwindle

0

Remote workers are “grandfathered” in their roles. New hires are not so lucky.

Work-from-home opportunities are dwindling as more companies demand employees return to the office. Current remote workers are finding it increasingly challenging to secure new work-from-home positions.

Indeed tracks remote job listings. According to its data, 10.2% of American jobs were remote in 2022, but that figure declined to 8% in 2024.

Julia Pollak, the chief economist at ZipRecruiter, spoke with Business Insider about the decline in remote positions and its implications for current and future employees.

While companies try to keep long-term employees happy, they are becoming less flexible with return-to-office mandates. Some companies have even reversed their return-to-office policies to retain current staff. However, new hires are not benefiting from such “grandfathering” and are subject to new policies requiring physical office presence.

“We know that companies frequently make exceptions to return-to-office mandates for employees to avoid losing them so that policy changes might affect new hires more than incumbent employees,” Pollak said.

Kory Kantenga, head of LinkedIn’s Economic Graph Institute, agrees with Pollak’s assessment. New hires will likely face daily commutes, while current employees may continue to enjoy the benefit of working from home, at least part-time.

“If you already have a job and are grandfathered into this flexible work, you’re maintaining it in many cases,” Kantenga said. “Companies are using those new positions to roll that flexible work back a little bit, but they’re not necessarily rolling it back for the workers who already have it.”

JPMorgan Chase is the latest company to require a five-day return to the office for existing employees. According to Forbes, the announcement was met with backlash from the company’s 300,000 employees. Workers voiced their dissent on the company’s internal messaging system, even suggesting the creation of a union.

In response, the company shut down the message board, citing the large reaction “might overwhelm the moderation team.”

CEO Jamie Dimon argues that remote work stifles creativity and undermines the “apprenticeship model” that fosters growth in large companies. He remains committed to moving forward with the plan.

“Most professionals learn their job through an apprenticeship model, which is almost impossible to replicate in Zoom. Over time, this drawback could dramatically undermine the character and culture you want to promote in your company,” Dimon said.

While company culture and character are not easily quantifiable, productivity is. Studies have shown that remote workers tend to be more productive throughout the workday.

The bigger and better Nintendo console will arrive later this year.

The era of the Nintendo Switch 2 is officially about to begin.Nintendo‘s announcement, though light on details, confirmed that the follow-up to the wildly popular Nintendo Switch console will arrive this year. Nintendo also took the opportunity to share this reveal video that shows off the upcoming Switch 2.

Gleaning details from the video, the Switch 2 appears to feature both a larger screen and larger Joy-Cons than its predecessor. The new Joy-Cons also use magnets to attach to the console instead of the slide-in track used on the original. Like the Switch, the Switch 2 will also feature a dock for charging and television gameplay compatibility. The video ends with confirmation that the Switch 2 will indeed be backward compatible with Switch games, a huge perk that means no one has to give up their Switch library when making the move to the next console generation.

Megan Thee Stallion’s Ex-Cameraman Cites “Hypersexualized” Song Lyrics In Amended Lawsuit

0

Photographer Emilio Garcia is intensifying his legal battle against rapper Megan Thee Stallion, filing an amended complaint that introduces new allegations of workplace misconduct and physical intimidation. The lawsuit, initially filed last year, accuses Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete, of creating a hostile work environment and seeks six-figure compensation for unpaid wages, overtime, and employee benefits.

In the latest filing, Garcia claims he was misclassified as an independent contractor rather than a full-time employee, leading to unpaid overtime and denied breaks. He further alleges that Megan Thee Stallion physically assaulted him by throwing a TV remote at his head during a 2022 incident in a hotel. The complaint suggests this act was an attempt to intimidate Garcia into silence regarding incidents that occurred in Ibiza, Spain, and other alleged misconduct.

Additionally, Garcia argues that Megan’s explicit song lyrics contributed to an unprofessional work environment, blending her “hypersexualized and graphic” music with workplace interactions. He claims this dynamic fostered unlawful discrimination, harassment, and retaliation.

Iggy Azalea Reveals She Hasn’t Spoken to Playboi Carti in Six Months

0

Iggy Azalea recently disclosed that she hasn’t communicated with her ex-partner, Playboi Carti, in over six months. This revelation came after a fan urged her to prompt Carti to release his new album, to which she responded, “We haven’t heard from that man in over 6 months, we don’t know where he is… We don’t know or care.”

The couple, who share a 4-year-old son named Onyx, have had a tumultuous relationship. In 2020, Azalea confirmed their split, stating she was raising their son alone.

She has previously criticized Carti for his absence from their child’s life, labeling him a “deadbeat dad.”

Azalea’s recent comments have reignited discussions about Carti’s involvement in his son’s upbringing and his prolonged absence from the music scene. As of now, Playboi Carti has not publicly responded to Azalea’s statements.
