Why Mental Health Awareness Matters and How You Can Make a Difference

Mental health is not just a personal concern but a collective responsibility. Despite growing conversations around it, mental health remains misunderstood, under-resourced, and stigmatized. Raising awareness is more than sharing statistics or hashtags—it’s about fostering understanding, compassion, and actionable change that improves lives.

This article delves into the profound importance of mental health awareness, explores ways to engage meaningfully, and highlights the critical roles organizations and communities play in supporting mental well-being.

Why Mental Health Awareness Matters

The numbers speak volumes: 1 in 5 adults in the United States—approximately 52.9 million people—experience mental illness in a given year. These statistics, while eye-opening, only hint at the broader impact. Behind every number is a story of struggle, resilience, and the pressing need for a more supportive society.

Stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to seeking help. Misconceptions paint mental health struggles as weaknesses rather than health conditions. This stigma discourages openness, isolates individuals, and delays treatment. Awareness helps dismantle these misconceptions, normalizing conversations about mental health and encouraging people to seek help early.

Moreover, understanding mental health is crucial for early intervention. Recognizing signs of distress in ourselves or others can make a life-changing difference. Awareness also builds empathy, helping families, friends, and workplaces become safer spaces for those who are struggling.

Mental health awareness is not just a conversation—it’s an invitation to act. And every action, no matter how small, contributes to creating a society where mental well-being is prioritized.

How to Support Mental Health Awareness

Awareness doesn’t end with knowing the facts. It’s about turning knowledge into action. Here are ways to engage meaningfully:

  1. Educate Yourself: Understanding conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder helps you empathize and support others effectively. Reliable resources from organizations like NAMI and SAMHSA can provide insights and practical guidance.
  2. Start Conversations: Talking about mental health openly can normalize seeking help. Share your experiences or ask someone how they’re doing—and really listen.
  3. Practice Compassion: Sometimes, offering a listening ear or a kind word can make all the difference. Empathy reduces isolation and builds trust.
  4. Support Resources: Share information about helplines, local mental health services, and online support groups. The National Helpline (1-800-662-HELP) and similar resources provide critical connections for those in need.
  5. Advocate for Change: Push for better policies, funding, and workplace practices that prioritize mental health. Advocacy ensures long-term, systemic improvements.
  6. Model Self-Care: By prioritizing your own mental health, you lead by example. Small actions—like taking breaks, setting boundaries, or seeking therapy—can inspire others to do the same.

Every step forward creates ripples. Whether it’s sharing a resource, hosting a workshop, or simply being present for someone, these actions contribute to a broader culture of care.

Organizations Making a Difference

NAMI: Empowering Individuals and Families

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) has long been a cornerstone in the mental health awareness movement. Through education, advocacy, and support, NAMI equips individuals and families with the tools to navigate mental health challenges.

One of NAMI’s standout initiatives is its “Take the Moment” campaign. This program emphasizes integrating small, mindful actions into daily routines to support mental wellness. These moments could include five minutes of deep breathing, journaling gratitude, or taking a short walk to reset. By framing mental health care as accessible and actionable, NAMI reduces barriers and encourages sustained well-being.

NAMI’s educational programs, such as Family-to-Family and Basics, provide invaluable support for caregivers. These peer-led initiatives equip participants with practical strategies, from navigating the mental health care system to managing stress within the family. Participants frequently describe these programs as transformative, offering not just knowledge but a sense of hope and empowerment.

SAMHSA: Enhancing Mental Health Literacy

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) focuses on improving access to resources and promoting understanding through a systemic lens. Initiatives like the National Helpline and the National Child Traumatic Stress Network connect individuals and communities to critical care.

SAMHSA’s efforts in public health data, such as the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), inform policy and drive effective interventions. Their resources enable schools, workplaces, and healthcare providers to implement evidence-based practices, ensuring mental health care reaches diverse populations.

While organizations lead the charge, communities are the heartbeat of the mental health awareness movement. Events like NAMIWalks demonstrate the power of collective action. These nationwide walks bring together thousands of individuals to raise funds, share stories, and create visible solidarity for mental health causes.

Participants often describe the experience as life-affirming. Walking alongside others who share similar struggles fosters connection and reduces isolation. Funds raised during these events directly support local programs, ensuring year-round resources for those in need.

Beyond events, community-driven initiatives—like peer support groups, school workshops, and local advocacy efforts—extend the impact of mental health awareness. These grassroots movements build networks of care that resonate long after the events end.

The Power of Personal Stories

At the heart of mental health awareness are the stories of those who have walked this path. Programs like NAMI In Our Own Voice amplify these voices, offering firsthand accounts of living with mental illness and finding hope.

Sharing personal experiences breaks down stereotypes and inspires others to seek help. It shows that recovery is possible and that no one is alone in their struggles. For those who share, the act itself can be healing, transforming pain into purpose.

If you’re considering sharing your story, here are some guidelines to ensure it’s a positive experience:

  • Reflect on your readiness and boundaries.
  • Emphasize hope and recovery while being honest about challenges.
  • Provide actionable advice or resources for others.
  • Practice self-care and seek support after sharing.

Every story becomes a thread in the fabric of understanding, weaving a stronger, more compassionate society.

Social Media’s Role in Awareness

Digital platforms have transformed mental health advocacy, making it easier to connect and share resources. Campaigns like #TakeAMentalHealthMoment and #EndTheStigma amplify voices and reach audiences who might not engage otherwise.

Social media fosters connection but requires thoughtful engagement. Here’s how to contribute:

  • Share factual, reputable resources.
  • Participate in hashtag campaigns to join larger conversations.
  • Post supportive content, like affirmations or coping tips.
  • Engage empathetically with others’ stories.

However, balance is key. Maintaining your own digital wellness by setting boundaries ensures that advocacy doesn’t become overwhelming.

Moving Beyond Awareness: Taking Action

Mental health awareness is the foundation for action. From volunteering with organizations to advocating for policy changes, there are countless ways to make a tangible difference:

  1. Volunteer Locally: Support programs like NAMI’s peer groups or awareness events.
  2. Advocate for Policy: Contact lawmakers to support mental health initiatives and funding.
  3. Support Research: Contribute to organizations advancing mental health studies.
  4. Engage Workplaces: Encourage mental health-friendly policies like flexible schedules or wellness programs.

Advocacy transforms awareness into systemic change, ensuring mental health remains a priority in healthcare, education, and beyond.

A Year-Round Commitment

Awareness is not confined to a specific month or event. It’s a continuous effort to educate, support, and advocate for better mental health outcomes. Here’s how you can stay engaged year-round:

  • Continue learning and sharing knowledge.
  • Build supportive habits in your daily life.
  • Offer empathy and support to those in need.
  • Advocate for long-term improvements in mental health care.

By committing to these actions, you contribute to a society where mental health is valued and supported—not just during campaigns, but every single day.

A Collective Journey

Mental health awareness is more than an idea; it’s a shared journey toward understanding and support. By educating ourselves, fostering connections, and advocating for systemic change, we can create a world where mental health is no longer a stigma but a priority.

Together, through compassion and action, we can build a mentally healthier, more inclusive society.

The Real Housewives of Lagos Season 3 Explores New Frontiers of Drama

0

Since its premiere in 2022, theReal Housewives of Lagos (RHOL) — a beloved reality television series following the lives of various Lagos socialites — has come to be known for a few things: intense, unpredictable drama and reinvention. Whether by introducing new characters or constantly shifting narrative gears, the franchise can, through its cast and their larger-than-life personalities, acutely deliver a look into the ever-evolving state of human character.

In its latest season, the series features three new cast members, one returning cast member from Season 1, and two members from the original season. The show has evolved to portray the unpredictability of friendship and community. Each season sees the formation and dissolution of various factions. Against the cosmetic backdrop of Lagos highlife, allyship is ditched for social currency, and ulterior motives are indistinguishable from genuine affection. It’s fascinating, delicious television, but it’s also deeply instructive.

This is especially true for Carolyna Hutchings, a beloved cast member who left after a tumultuous first season and whose return has been highly anticipated. “When I left the show, I realized that being true to yourself is the best way to live,” Hutchings tells BlackCosmopolitan. In her time away, Hutchings says she gained a deeper perspective on how the show works and why she, with a background in acting, was struggling with being herself. Most importantly, Hutchings says she realized how inspiring she had become to many viewers, even without meaning to.

“Taking a step back from the show opened my eyes to how much of an inspiration I am,” she says. “When I left, many women came into my DM to share how much I inspire them by standing up for myself regardless of my circumstances, which gave me the courage to return.”

New faces

Joining this new season of the RHOL (now streaming on Showmax) are Sophia Momodu, an entrepreneur and social influencer; Dabota Lawson, a cosmetics mogul; and Adeola C. Adeyemi, a beauty entrepreneur. Despite coming from vastly different backgrounds, these women share a common goal of joining a franchise known for revealing a new and sometimes unflattering side of well-known personalities in the Nigerian pop culture scene. Their decision to participate stems from a desire to try something different and to expand their rapidly growing social capital.

“It was an opportunity for me to showcase myself as a strong woman who is business-oriented and values family,” Lawson says of the reason why she joined the show, adding, “Also [as] a social experiment to see how far I can go outside my comfort zone, especially with [other] strong-willed women with big personalities.”

For Adeyemi, who describes herself as an introvert, participating in the new season is about stepping out of her comfort zone and offering viewers a more nuanced view of her personality, which is rarely seen on social media. “I want people to understand me better,” she explains. “When the cameras roll, it allows others to see a different perspective, potentially clearing up any misunderstandings about my personality or behavior.” Ultimately, as Adeyemi shares, the experience on RHOL is primarily focused on personal growth and finding a supportive community for herself and her brand.

On friendships

A major plotline and source of unending brawls in the RHOL series is the friendship and the pursuit of community. It’s why Hutchings left after the first season and can be correctly assumed to be one of the reasons three original cast members, actress Iyabo Ojo, entrepreneur Chioma Ikoku and Fashion Designer Toyin Lawani, exited the show after their second season.

For Lawson, her experience on the RHOL offered her a fresh perspective on friendship, reinforcing the idea that not everyone can be trusted and that forgiveness takes time. “What I came to experience with the ladies is that people are stuck in their ways,” Lawson tells BlackCosmopolitan. “Building a community of people, especially women, requires a lot of patience and empathy.”

The management of trust — who to give it to and how to withhold it — is also an important lesson Hutchings has learned on the show. “The show has taught me that the only person that can hurt you is the person closest to you.”

This season, Hutchings says viewers will see her vulnerability alongside her true self. “I’ve healed from many things, so you’ll see a full-blown woman who knows herself and her boundaries. But this is [also] me being a happy-go-lucky woman and enjoying the beauty of the world.”

Viewers can expect to see a jovial, professional and stylish side of Adeyemi. “I am just chilling, minding my business and having fun,” she says.

As for Lawson, she will reveal her more unpredictable side. “They’ll see a goofy side of me because many people on social media often see me in work mode.”

A Guide to a Healthier You: Workouts Tailored to Your Body Type

0

Push-ups, Sit-ups, squats, and running. These are some exercises people put on their priority list to get in shape and reach fitness goals. But sometimes, we lean towards exercises that are trending or sound like the best option, but they’re not the ones that could give us the best results individually.

Fitness is not a one-size-fits-all thing. You can do basic training exercises to get an overall workout in, but if there was a way to know exactly what kind of workout works best for your body type, would you try it?

Well, there is.

When we think about body types, the theory is to use the somatotype approach to use certain workouts that are more beneficial for the shape of your body. Personal trainer and nutrition coach Anastasia Reeves believes that while this approach can be helpful, it should not be the sole guide for ultimate fitness.

“I think it is realistic to say fitness is not one size fits all. However, the con to using the somatotype approach is that it almost suggests that if I am not a certain body type, certain fitness fields aren’t for me, and that is simply not true,” Reeves says. “However, when training is something you enjoy but isn’t necessarily going to get you the body you want, it can be discouraging. So when you are considering your body type, it is probably going to be the most efficient way to get those results of your body looking better faster.”

There are three different body types: Endomorphs, ectomorphs, and mesomorphs. Reeves shares with Black Cosmopolitan what each body type means and the workouts that will work best for each category.

Endomorph

An endomorph is someone who tends to hold onto more body fat. This person may be a little shorter or a little rounder in stature. Reeves suggests that endomorphs should look for high-intensity training exercise programs. This will help the person keep their heart rate up and make sure they burn more fat.

“I think that endomorphs do well in faster-paced, high-intensity classes similar to CrossFit classes and that nature,” she shares. “While cardio can be included, workouts that train the muscles and have short breath breaks in between work well. Because your heart is constantly working, and that’s what we are looking for to get the body in a better position.”

Ectomorph

A person with an ectomorph body type is the opposite of an endomorph. This is a category where you have a more lean, slim body. Reeves shares that hypertrophy, or muscle gain, can be difficult for ectomorphs. So, the recommended exercise routines are more hypertrophy-based.

“This looks like more slow and controlled reps in the gym. Putting a lot of time under tension on the muscle. So they should bench press, do shoulder raises, or do all the traditional strength exercises,” she says. “They probably should eat more in a caloric surplus than the others, too; that way, we’re fueling the muscles to grow. A strengthening training and keeping the energy low would be beneficial.”

Mesomorph

Mesomorphs are people with an athletic build. These are usually the bodies that everybody’s striving for. Reeves explains that for that person, their training would consist of a mixture of all workouts. Mesomorphs are generally responsive to strength training and conditioning exercises.

“They can do some cardio, strength training, and probably a lot of athletic-style training. I think that a mesomorph can do anything and maintain their body type because it’s their genetic makeup. As long as they’re active and moving, they’ll maintain a good body composition,” she says.

While we can include these workout plans into our fitness routine, Reeves adds that people should be mindful that there are different kinds of fat to tackle to reach ideal weight goals, which doesn’t necessarily rely on just exercising.

“So there’s subcutaneous fat, and there’s visceral fat. Your visceral fat is the fat that you can’t see, which is the fat around the organs. So some people have a very low subcutaneous fat level, and they look like they’re in shape. But they hold a lot of fat around their liver or a lot of fat around other organs. You can’t necessarily target that by exercise,” Reeves says. “All in all, a healthy lifestyle will keep your visceral fat down. Sleeping well and eating a well-balanced diet will keep that down.”

She adds, “If we bring body types into the picture, I will say that your endomorph body type should stay away from a lot of processed foods. But, someone who’s a mesomorph or an ectomorph can get away with eating more processed foods in their diet. Those types of things do need to be taken into consideration as well.”

Whatever your body type, choose the workout plan that will bring you the best results according to your personal fitness goals. But don’t forget that fitness is not just about the physical; it is also about nutrition, emotional well-being, and an overall healthy mindset.

October London Teams Up with Mr. & Mrs. Bourbon Company for Limited-Edition Spirit

0

October London, a crooner known for his hit song “Back to Your Place” and for sounding like the long-lost offspring of Marvin Gaye, is dipping his toe into spirits. Bourbon, specifically.

To match his silky smooth vocals, London is partnering with the Mr. & Mrs. Bourbon Company, co-founded by professional basketball player Russ Smith in 2019, to launch a premium limited-edition expression. The Death Row Records recording artist and current Grammy nominee says the partnership goes deeper than simply crafting a bottle of bourbon with his name and face on it. He compares the making of the spirit, its journey, to the complex process of creating music.

“I think that this collaboration merges my love for true artistry with elevated craftsmanship,” he tells Black Cosmopolitan. “I’m a true lover of sophistication and this collaboration offers a premium experience for bourbon enthusiasts and music lovers alike.”

Smith, the CEO, couldn’t agree more.

“This collaboration is not only a merging of the entertainment, sports, and liquor industries, but it will redefine how young entrepreneurs seek to create partnerships that are rooted in luxury, style, quality, and creativity,” he shares in a statement. “October and I wanted this project to break down barriers for any aspiring minds looking to generate new and innovative business opportunities in our community.”

Mr. & Mrs. Bourbon and October London

So what does it taste like? It’s a wheat bourbon made in Kentucky that was distilled in 2018 and aged for six years, creating a flavor with touches of caramel, toffee, and vanilla. The taste is rich; the blend is smooth. Both men say that the launch of this bourbon is also the launch of more collaborations and projects that fuse the world of fine whiskey with the world of entertainment.

“October London embodies the same passion and authenticity that we pour into every bottle of bourbon,” Smith adds. “Our bourbon, much like his music, is an expression of the soul. Together, we’ve created something for bourbon enthusiasts and fans alike to enjoy and share with loved ones. This collaboration represents an unparalleled element of style and October has been involved at every level of this process.”

Expect to see London sipping on it on stage when he kicks off his headlining tour, “October Nights,” this spring, as the spirit will also be made available at some venues during the outing. Before that begins, he’ll be seen at the upcoming Grammys in February, as he’s nominated for two awards.

The collaboration between Mr. & Mrs. Bourbon and October London is $100 and available exclusively at octobersbourbon.com before hitting specific retailers in the spring. Reserved bottles ordered with custom bundles are set to come with branded rock glasses, candles to set the mood, and a playlist with some of London’s unreleased tunes.

Clearing the Air—Nicole Ari Parker on Missing the “Single Life” with Boris Kodjoe (Video)

Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kodjoe have been Hollywood’s ultimate couple goals for over 17 years. Recently, Nicole made headlines after sharing her thoughts on the newness of relationships, leading some to speculate about marital troubles. However, Boris stepped in to set the record straight, reminding everyone about the importance of context and communication in long-term partnerships. Here is the video (COVID ERA and you can clearly hear and SEE the truth without the clickbait)

Nicole Ari Parker began trending after a clip surfaced from a discussion with Chris Spencer and his wife Vanessa on their new show. In the clip, Nicole spoke candidly about how she sometimes reminisces about the excitement and spontaneity that comes with the early stages of a relationship.

Nicole said, “Sometime in the last year or so I thought, I wish that he was my boyfriend again. I don’t necessarily want to be single, but I miss the single life, I miss the text messages for no reason, I miss the coming up behind me when I’m scrambling eggs and just kissing me on the back of the neck.”

She elaborated on how those little moments of spontaneity often fade in long-term relationships, leaving some fans to believe that Nicole and Boris might be going through a rough patch. The clip, however, was a small segment of what Boris later revealed was a much longer and lighthearted conversation.

Taking to social media, Boris firmly clarified the context of his wife’s comments. He explained, “When you can’t believe all of the Quarantine crazy chit chat. Come on ya’ll, really?! Okay, first of all, you’re commenting on a short clickbait 1-minute slice of a hilarious hour-long conversation on our best friends’ new show. Second of all, this part was meant to give hope to those who’ve been together for a long a** time.”

Boris went on to agree with Nicole, saying, “My wife was right! Boyfriend and girlfriend time matters. Take care of each other, show each other, love each other, time is not promised.” His words reinforced the importance of rekindling that spark and prioritizing romance, no matter how long a couple has been together.

This candid discussion offers a refreshing perspective on long-term relationships, showing that even the strongest marriages require effort and intentionality. Nicole and Boris have not only navigated their marriage with grace but have also used this moment to inspire other couples to nurture their relationships and embrace the beauty of evolution.

While the internet was quick to assume the worst, Boris and Nicole have once again demonstrated what makes their bond so special—open communication, honesty, and unwavering support. Their story is a reminder that love is a journey, and maintaining connection takes effort and care. Here’s to their continued growth as a couple and to inspiring us all to cherish our own relationships.

Justin Bieber Unfollows Usher on Instagram—What Happened? Unpacking Justin Bieber’s Unfollow of Usher on Instagram

0

In a surprising turn of events, Justin Bieber has unfollowed his longtime mentor and friend, Usher, on Instagram. This unexpected move has ignited widespread speculation and concern among fans and industry insiders, given the duo’s deep-rooted history.

A few months back in his bombshell statement, Suge Knight said, “Those guys … they introduced cocaine to my artists. So once they got on cocaine, once they got on drugs, once they got on alcohol, then that’s when the weird stuff happened. I think that’s what took Puffy [Combs] down that lane.”

Adding complexity to the situation is the ongoing controversy involving Sean “Diddy” Combs. Suge Knight, the former CEO of Death Row Records, recently claimed in an interview with NewsNation that Diddy, Usher, and even Justin Bieber were victims of control and manipulation by powerful music executives. Knight alleged that these execs introduced drugs and alcohol to artists, steering them into dangerous and compromising situations.

In his bombshell statement, Knight said, “Those guys … they introduced cocaine to my artists. So once they got on cocaine, once they got on drugs, once they got on alcohol, then that’s when the weird stuff happened. I think that’s what took Puffy [Combs] down that lane.”

Could Bieber’s recent actions be tied to these revelations? Some fans believe he might be distancing himself from individuals linked to the allegations for the sake of personal growth.

Additionally, Bieber recently declined an invitation to perform alongside Usher at the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show, citing that he “wasn’t feeling it.” This decision, paired with the unfollow, has left fans questioning whether there is a deeper rift between the two.

Amidst the speculation, it’s worth noting that Bieber recently became a father, welcoming his son, Jack Blues Bieber, in August. Some believe that Bieber’s focus on family and his evolving priorities might be driving these changes.

Amidst the speculation, it’s worth noting that Bieber recently became a father, welcoming his son, Jack Blues Bieber, in August. Some believe that Bieber’s focus on family and his evolving priorities might be driving these changes.

A Storied Mentorship

Usher played a pivotal role in Justin Bieber’s ascent to stardom. Discovered on YouTube as a young teenager, Bieber was introduced to Usher, who recognized his potential and became his mentor. Their collaboration led to chart-topping hits and a close personal bond, with Usher guiding Bieber through the complexities of the music industry.

The Unfollow and Its Implications

The recent act of unfollowing Usher on Instagram has raised eyebrows, especially considering Bieber’s simultaneous unfollowing of other close associates, including his former manager Scooter Braun, Allison Kaye, Kenny Hamilton, Ryan Good, and producer Poo Bear. This pattern suggests a deliberate distancing from key figures in his professional circle.

Potential Reasons Behind the Rift

Several theories have emerged to explain this apparent estrangement:

  • Diddy’s Controversy: Sean “Diddy” Combs is currently embroiled in serious allegations, including
  •  sexual misconduct and abuse. Usher’s past close association with Diddy has led to speculation that Bieber’s unfollowing is an attempt to distance himself from individuals linked to the controversy. Notably, Bieber still follows Diddy on social media, adding complexity to this theory.
  • Super Bowl Snub: Earlier reports indicated that Bieber declined an invitation to perform alongside Usher at the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show. While sources suggest Bieber “wasn’t feeling it,” some fans interpret this as a sign of underlying tensions between the two artists.
  • Personal Growth and Family Focus: With the recent birth of his son, Jack Blues Bieber, in August, Bieber may be reevaluating his personal and professional relationships to focus on family and personal well-being. This life change could be prompting him to distance himself from past associations.

Fan Reactions and Speculations

Justin Bieber fans concerned for star after he abruptly unfollows Usher and 5 other longtime friends

Fans have taken to social media platforms, particularly Reddit, to express their concerns and theories. Some believe Bieber is making a conscious effort to distance himself from potentially harmful influences, while others worry about the implications for his mental health and future projects.

Conclusion

The unfolding situation between Justin Bieber and Usher is both surprising and concerning, given their longstanding relationship. As neither party has publicly addressed the issue, fans are left to speculate on the reasons behind this apparent rift. Whether it’s a response to external controversies, personal growth, or other undisclosed factors, the music industry and fans alike are keenly observing for any developments.

Chris Brown Shares List Of Every White Celebrity Who’s Been Forgiven For Their Troubled Past

0

Black Cosmopolitans, Chris Brown is making headlines once again, but this time it’s not for his music. The singer recently sparked a heated discussion by highlighting a perceived double standard in how public figures are judged for their past actions. Brown shared a list of white celebrities who’ve faced controversies but seemingly regained public acceptance over time.

Brown’s list includes big names like Mel Gibson, known for his anti-Semitic remarks and scandals, and Charlie Sheen, whose troubled history spans substance abuse and allegations of domestic issues. He also referenced actors like Steven Seagal, accused of misconduct, and rock icons like Slash, who have faced their share of controversies.

The singer’s frustration stems from the constant resurfacing of his past, particularly his 2009 domestic violence case involving Rihanna, which he acknowledges but feels has overshadowed his career for over a decade. “If they can be forgiven, why can’t I?” Brown questioned during his post, reigniting debates about how society handles accountability and redemption.

Critics argue that Brown’s case is unique due to the severity of the incident, but others believe the issue is rooted in racial bias within media and public perception. Fans have taken to social media, with some supporting Brown’s call for fairness while others argue that celebrities should be held accountable regardless of race.

This raises broader questions: Should public forgiveness have consistent standards, or do fame and race skew perceptions? And at what point should someone’s past stop defining their present?

What’s your perspective, Black Cosmopolitans? Does Chris Brown have a valid point about double standards in forgiveness, or is his case different from the examples he provided? Let’s talk about it in the comments!

5 Steps For Planning Your Corporate Exit Strategy

0

More workers are opting out of the traditional corporate ladder. Here are 5 steps on how to join this growing trend.

With more corporate workers being forced back to the office, a growing number of employees are preparing their exit from the traditional career ladder.

What used to be the desire to remain at a company and climb the ladder to a C-Suite corner office has shifted toward pursuing portfolio careers, independent consulting, freelance work, and fractional executive roles. The increase in return-to-office policies are seeing more workers rework their corporate journey into careers that work for them and not the other way around.

Making the shift from a traditional work model can be both rewarding and challenging, especially when your livelihood is on the line. For those contemplating a career change that involves leaving or scaling back their 9-to-5 role, Fast Company offers five tips to help guide your transition.

Step 1: Delve Into the Concept

The first step in transitioning from the traditional corporate ladder is to delve into the concept you have in mind. Share your idea with trusted confidants to gather feedback. If you have a coach or advisor, collaborate with them to identify the major obstacles holding you back and strategize potential solutions to overcome them.

Step 2: Analyze the Financials

Coins are key to deciding on your next career move. With income often being the biggest hurdle, analyzing the finances behind a career transition is essential. Key questions to address include: How much income do you need each month to meet your basic needs? How much would make you feel secure and comfortable? Keep in mind that this initial amount won’t define your revenue forever—it’s simply a starting point that feels manageable and achievable.

Step 3: Identify Your Unique Value

Identifying your value proposition is a critical step in making a career transition. Take time to reflect on what you have to offer and who would benefit from it. The aim is to separate external factors from your skills and understand who you’re best equipped—or most passionate—to serve. No matter what kind of transition you’re making, it’s essential to have a clear understanding of your strengths and target audience. Write it down in the simplest, most direct way possible and incorporate it into your outreach. This will become both your guide and business plan as you move forward.

Step 4: Reach Out to Your Network

See who can support you in your career transition. You can’t expect help unless you ask, and people won’t know how to assist you unless you’re clear and direct about what you’re seeking. As mentioned earlier, trusted confidants can offer support, along with mentors, former colleagues, and old classmates. Keeping your value proposition in mind, be clear about your goals and needs. Your champions will appreciate hearing from you and will value knowing how they can best help.

Step 5: Make Your Voice Heard

Visibility matters when you’re trying to get noticed for new opportunities. Utilize social media to share your latest projects and achievements, attend industry events, and leave comments online to increase your digital footprint. Stepping out of your comfort zone and engaging beyond your usual circle will help you feel more connected to others, who may eventually become partners, advocates, or clients. Creating original content and showcasing your expertise can be challenging and uncomfortable for some. But it’s a powerful way to signal to both familiar and unfamiliar audiences that you’re available, experienced, and ready for business.

“My baby @acetucker is growing up so fast! I’ll save my emotional post for his actual bday but we’re already celebrating! I love you Ace! 😘❤️”

In the action-packed video, there are clips of Ace having the time of his life with friends and family in addition to adults joining in on the fun. The 49-year-old artist also shared another post praising the party.

“All of our parties be lit. Even the kid parties!” she wrote in the caption of the post before thanking friends and family for showing up to the celebration.

The Real Housewives of Atlanta alumni kept her word and followed up with an intimate birthday post on Ace’s actual birthday, which is January 6.

“Happy Birthday to my baby boy @acetucker!!! I love you soooo much! So smart, handsome, respectful, outgoing, caring, competitive, loving, talented & just an overall VIBE! I’m so proud to be your mom. I’m enjoying watching you grow up. Give @acetucker some birthday love!!!! Can y’all believe he’s 9yrs old already?!” she wrote under a reel of precious moments of Ace throughout his nine years.

Ace is Burruss’ second-born child and the first one she had with her longtime husband Todd. The couple had their second child, Blaze Tucker, in 2019. Kandi and Todd also came to the relationship with one child each–Riley Burruss and Kaela Tucker.

Todd couldn’t let his only son’s birthday pass without giving him an Instagram shout-out.

“Happy Birthday to my guy! @acetucker,” the entrepreneur wrote in an Instagram caption. “I love you so much and I get more and more excited to be apart of journey in life. I’ve been so blessed to have an amazing son like you. Happy Birthday and I look forward to spending many more with you!”

Kandi and Todd have been married since April 2014, surpassing a decade of love.

“I know it’s going to end in premium tears, but so long as I’m the king of the jungle, we’re good,” renowned stylist Swanky Jerry declares in the newly-released trailer of Netflix’s Young, Famous & African. It’s a tantalizing glimpse into the drama, decadence, and chaos set to unfold when the third season of the hit reality show premieres later this week on Friday, January 17.

In its previous seasons, Young, Famous & African combined the excesses of celebrity and socialite lifestyle with ego-driven conflict and moments of vulnerability. The show has spawnedseveral highlights and driven a handful of viral conversations, living up to its title as “Africa’s hottest reality series.”

Season 3 welcomes South African content creator Kefilwe Mabote, iconic Nigerian actress Ini Edo, and Ugandan boxer and entrepreneur Shakib Lutaaya to the show’s cast of superstars. They will join returning cast members like Nigerian actress and entrepreneur Annie Macaulay-Idibia, Tanzanian musician Diamond Platnumz, Namibian businessman and media personality Luis Munana, South African rap artist Nadia Nakai, and several other familiar personalities from past seasons.

The show will again see the packed cast of friends and frenemies shaking up Sandton, aka Africa’s richest square mile, offering dramatic break-ups and affecting make-ups. TheSAFTA-winning series will pull back the curtains on fractured marriages, fragile friendships, and fresh connections.

Notably, South African actress and media personality Bonang Matheba will not return to the show after debuting in the second season.
