Books by writers of color have been under attack by conservative activists who want to remove their works from libraries and schools around the country. Iowa is second only to Florida, with more than 3,000 titles by writers including Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison and Angie Thomas removed under a 2023 state law. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones is working to ensure students in her home state have access to books that tell Black stories through community initiatives.

A 63-year-old motorist drove his car at high speed up the driveway of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's East Hampton mansion, crashing through the front gates and causing significant damage.
