Cynthia Erivo to Star as Jesus in ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’

Cynthia Erivo is set to bless the stage once again this time as Jesus in a star-studded production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’.

When the news hit the Internet went crazy.  The news turned into a wave of outrage, revealing deep-rooted biases about race, gender, and religion in the entertainment industry.

Instead of discussing Erivo’s acting and vocal abilities—both widely praised—Twitter (now X) has been flooded with backlash. Some claim the casting mocks Christianity, while others ask why such bold reinterpretations aren’t made with other religious figures. Meanwhile, racist and Islamophobic rhetoric has emerged, showing how conversations around representation often bring out the worst in some people.

This isn’t the first time a Black actor playing Jesus has sparked controversy. Similar outrage occurred when Black actors were cast in biblical roles in other productions. But in a rock musical where artistic interpretation is key, why is Erivo’s portrayal suddenly an issue? The reaction speaks volumes about which narratives society is comfortable challenging and which ones it isn’t.

The Emmy, GRAMMY, and Tony-winning powerhouse (and three-time Oscar nominee) will take on the iconic role in Andrew Llyod Webber and Tim Rice’s legendary rock opera, which explores the final days of Jesus Christ through the lens of Judas.

Directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Sergio Trujillo, with musical direction from Stephen Oremus, this production will usher in the revival of the Bowl’s summer musical series after a pandemic-induced hiatus.

Erivo is no stranger to ‘Superstar,’ having previously lent her vocals as Mary Magdalene to an all-female album version. Now, she’ll bring her divine vocals to LA for three unmissable performances from August 1-3 2025.

The role follows the star’s stunning performance in ‘Wicked’ and will take place ahead of her starring role in the sequel ‘Wicked For Good’ (which hits theaters on November 21).
