Demetria Coley Becomes FSU’s Youngest Nurse Grad

At just 18, Demetria Coley is already making history as the youngest graduate of the Florida State University College of Nursing. While most teens are just stepping into adulthood, she has been steadily moving through college-level milestones for years, showing what focus, discipline, and purpose can look like when they come together early.

The Tallahassee native had already earned her Associate of Arts degree from Tallahassee State College and received her high school diploma by age 15. She later completed additional coursework at Florida A&M University to meet nursing prerequisites before entering FSU’s nursing program in spring 2025. Even with such a major accomplishment under her belt, she kept her reaction simple, saying she was just happy to be able to walk across the stage.

Her path into healthcare was shaped by more than academic ambition. She gained hands-on experience through work with the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, volunteered in the Emergency Department at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, and completed a preceptorship at Orlando Health Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies. Although she once considered becoming a surgeon, nursing stood out because of the deeper patient connection it offers and the chance to care for people in a more personal, ongoing way.

That purpose is also rooted in family. After losing her mother, Elicia, to ovarian cancer in 2020, she decided to pursue a path that would make her proud. With a father who is a science teacher and department chair, education and excellence were clearly part of the foundation that helped shape her journey. After finishing her clinicals at Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare, Demetria Coley plans to build a career in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit nursing.

Stories like this hit differently in our communities because they reflect more than personal success. They speak to legacy, grief turned into purpose, and the kind of Black excellence that grows quietly through hard work long before the spotlight arrives.
