The 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live was a truly unforgettable moment for comedy, marking the legendary return of Eddie Murphy. His appearance alongside a stellar lineup of comedic heavyweights – Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Kenan Thompson, and Tracy Morgan – felt like a cultural reunion, a powerful testament to SNL’s enduring legacy and its role in shaping Black comedy for decades.

This special event in February 2025 wasn’t just a celebration of a milestone anniversary; it was a deeply personal homecoming for Murphy. Seeing him share the stage with these titans of humor, including Eddie Murphy, was a rare and historic occasion that had fans buzzing. The lineup itself was a masterclass, showcasing the evolution and impact of Black talent on the comedy landscape.

One of the standout moments was undoubtedly the “Black Jeopardy” sketch. Murphy’s uncanny impression of Tracy Morgan, delivered while standing next to the man himself, sent the audience into an uproar and lit up social media feeds with reactions. It was a display of comedic mastery that perfectly encapsulated the spirit of the night.

Chris Rock kicked off the tribute by reminding everyone of Murphy’s pivotal role in saving SNL in the 1980s and how he inspired an entire generation of comedians. For those who grew up watching him, it was a powerful validation of his influence. For newer viewers, it was an introduction to the sheer magnitude of Eddie Murphy’s comedic genius.

This special also served as a potent reminder of SNL’s historical significance as a launchpad for Black comedic brilliance. From Murphy and Rock in the early days to Chappelle, Thompson, and Morgan today, these artists represent five decades of culture-shaping talent. Murphy himself described the reunion as a true “homecoming,” reinforcing SNL’s indelible mark on American comedy history. The collective energy and shared legacy on that stage were a powerful affirmation of Black excellence in entertainment.

    1. Tracy looks about exactly like I figured he would. lol He still got beef and upset over he was treated when he was a cast member. (And even Eddie knows there were foul moments when he was coming up on SNL, which is why he didn’t come back for so many years.) Bless these brothas. I’m sure they all went through some stuff. #pioneers
