reality television can be complicated, especially when navigating conversations about identity. Garcelle Beauvais recently opened up about a challenging moment from her time on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills—an off-camera exchange that made her feel like a fundamental part of who she is was being sidelined.
The actress and Bravo alum, 59, shared her story on SiriusXM’s The Julia Cunningham Show while reflecting on her years on the series. She recalled that during her second season, reality television co-star Lisa Rinna, 62, suggested during drinks that race should be left out of the show because viewers wanted pure entertainment. Garcelle had to sit with that request and really think about what it meant for her presence on the show.
Looking back, Garcelle said she did not seriously consider quitting RHOBH at that moment, though the comment hit differently.
“I didn’t think about walking away then, but I was very taken aback by that because I show up and my race shows up with me, and if this is truly reality, don’t you want to see my reality too?” she explained, her tone reflecting the weight of that conversation.
Garcelle emphasized that she wasn’t trying to make every scene about race or turn the show into something preachy. What she was saying, though, was clear: you cannot erase someone’s identity and expect them to perform authenticity. The queer identity conversations, the queer identity moments, the cultural nuances she brought—they all matter.
“I mean, obviously, I don’t wear it like, ‘We have to, you know, Black power.’ That’s not who I am, but at the same time, you can’t negate who I am and what I bring and my experience,” she said. “That was a tough one, honestly.”
The former co-host of The Real exited RHOBH in March 2025 after five seasons as a full-time cast member. Her departure marked the end of an era, but her words about representation and authenticity? Those will continue to resonate.
