Milwaukee is grappling with a heartbreaking child death case after Kevin McCall and Christina Davis were charged in connection with the death of their 1-year-old child. According to investigators, officers responded to an apartment on Feb. 22 after receiving a report about a child who was not breathing, and the baby was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
Police said the infant showed signs that raised immediate concern, including reports that rigor mortis had already started and that the child was found in extremely poor condition. As the investigation unfolded, authorities said both parents admitted to leaving their children home alone on multiple occasions over a period of months. Investigators also said there were conflicting statements about how the baby was cared for in the hours before the child’s death.
One of the most disturbing details in the case came from the couple’s 6-year-old daughter, who reportedly told detectives she saw her mother prepare a bottle with something she described as “medicine” that would make the baby “pass out.” The child allegedly identified the substance as Fireball whiskey, and police later said they found an empty bottle inside the apartment. Davis reportedly denied giving the baby alcohol and said she had only used cold and flu medicine.
Authorities have also said the medical examiner did not find trauma, illness, or infection that clearly explained the child’s death, leaving major questions still unanswered as the case moves forward. For now, Kevin McCall and Christina Davis remain jailed on bond while they face chronic child neglect charges and prepare for their next court appearance.
Cases like this hit especially hard because they force communities to confront the realities of neglect, family instability, and the ways vulnerable children can fall through the cracks. Beyond the court process, this is also a painful reminder that protecting children has to be a shared responsibility, not something left to tragedy and hindsight.
