Penn High School Racist Broadcast: Announcer Uses N-Word on Live Stream

The sports arena has long been heralded as a great equalizer, but a recent Penn High School racist broadcast serves as a chilling reminder that anti-Blackness continues to infiltrate even the most sacred of athletic spaces. In South Bend, Indiana, an appalling display of overt racism erupted during a live student broadcast of a high school playoff basketball game. The community has been left reeling, sparking immediate and intense backlash from local leaders, parents, and civil rights advocates. The focal point of this outrage is Penn High School, a predominantly white institution where a student announcer felt comfortable enough to hurl monkey noises and the N-word at a Black opposing player on a public platform.

The disturbing incident unfolded on March 6 during a highly anticipated playoff matchup between Penn High School and rival Riley High School. The game was being live-streamed on the school’s official YouTube sports channel, “The Pennant.” As Kelin Webster, a 6-foot-4 Black star player from Riley, stepped up to the free-throw line, a student providing play-by-play commentary resorted to vile, racist tropes. According to multiple viewers and video evidence that quickly surfaced online, the announcer began making loud monkey sounds before uttering the “N-word” three times in rapid succession.

The sheer audacity of this Penn High School racist broadcast shocked not only the viewers at home but also a fellow student broadcaster sharing the microphone. Recognizing the immediate gravity of the situation, the co-announcer could be heard frantically interjecting, “Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! … Simon, c’mon now,” before demanding to “Cut the stream.” The live feed was abruptly taken down within seconds, but the damage was already done. Screen recordings of the hateful rhetoric rapidly circulated across Facebook, TikTok, and other social media platforms, igniting a firestorm of digital and local outrage.

For the South Bend community, this was more than just a lapse in judgment by a misguided teenager; it was a glaring exposure of the systemic cultural issues festering within the district. Following the incident, Penn High Principal Rachel Fry sent an email to school families asserting that the offensive language and behavior “do not reflect the expectations we have for our students” and promising a thorough investigation. She noted that the school’s student code of conduct would be strictly followed to address the horrific behavior. However, many felt that the administrative response was entirely insufficient for the magnitude of the transgression.

The South Bend chapter of the NAACP quickly mobilized, bringing intense scrutiny to the policies of the Penn-Harris-Madison (PMH) school district. After a comprehensive review of the district’s student conduct handbook, the NAACP declared that they were “not impressed,” pointing out a glaring lack of clear provisions specifically addressing the use of derogatory and racist language. The civil rights organization didn’t just demand an apology; they called for systemic accountability. They requested that the district overhaul its code of conduct and mandated that the offending student—along with their parents—be required to research the deeply harmful impact of racist language and present a formal paper on their findings to the school board during a public meeting.

But the demands didn’t stop there. Infuriated parents, local activists, and groups like Black Lives Matter South Bend have threatened a full-scale athletic boycott. They argue that simply suspending a student or making them write an essay doesn’t rectify the trauma inflicted upon Kelin Webster and the broader Black student body. Some community members have vocally demanded that the team associated with the broadcaster should automatically forfeit the game and face elimination from the season to demonstrate that institutional racism carries severe, team-wide consequences. School board member Marcus Ellison, who is Black, confirmed that a “private apology” had taken place but noted that the broader institutional response would define the district’s true commitment to anti-racism.

Why does this matter so deeply to Black culture? This incident is a harsh, localized reminder of the overt racism that Black youth are continuously subjected to in academic and athletic environments. Sports are often pitched to Black children as a pathway to success, community, and higher education. Yet, moments like this prove that even when a Black athlete is merely playing a game, their humanity is still up for debate by those harboring deeply ingrained prejudices. Protecting the mental health, emotional well-being, and absolute dignity of Black student-athletes is paramount.

The community’s swift, uncompromising demand for justice in the wake of this Penn High School racist broadcast underscores a fundamental necessity: a zero-tolerance policy for anti-Blackness in our schools. We can no longer accept generic PR statements and quiet, private apologies as sufficient remedies for public racial humiliation. There must be structural, unyielding consequences that reflect the severity of the offense. Until institutions are held fully accountable for the safety and respect of Black students, these athletic arenas will remain battlegrounds not just for sports, but for basic human dignity.
