“What I’ve experienced that’s been really surprising is… When we got married, Raven kind of gave me a quick, you know, ‘This might be difficult.’ And when one of the reasons that we—she broke up with me was because she wasn’t ready to be with a White person.” Miranda admitted she didn’t realize Raven was struggling with those feelings while they were dating, which left her feeling helpless. “There’s nothing I can do about it. There’s nothing I can do about it. There’s nothing I can do about my Whiteness,” she stated, wishing she could have been more aware and supportive. She also shared her shock at the sheer volume of hate she gets just for her race, as part of an interracial couple. This is partly why they started their YouTube channel—to show real representation, unlike characters from a TV show. The online vitriol includes claims she’s ‘Raven’s handler,’ ‘whitewashing her,’ a ‘gold digger,’ and ‘controlling.’ She hears things like, ‘I don’t let Raven do anything by herself,’ ‘I talk too much,’ and ‘I interrupt.’ “I mean, the sh*t that I see and hear is overwhelming. And it’s kind of a shame because the truth of what’s happening is we’re a couple that’s trying to like grow, thrive, create content that people may resonate with, might be entertained by. I’m also trying to—yeah, of course—step into my own strengths, find my voice more clearly in my work field. There are personal goals and growth that I’m also trying to achieve that everyone is entitled to. So, I’ve tried to honestly let all of it go, Ashlyn, because the noise shouldn’t impact me one way or another, whether it’s positive or negative.”
Raven jumped in, admitting her own perspective on comments has evolved.
“That’s a new thought process. Let me jump in here real quick. Yeah, that’s a new thought process.” She explained that initially, Miranda questioned why Raven didn’t engage with the comments. Raven, seasoned in dealing with online hate, knew “the best thing to do is to delete the app and keep going.” But everything changed when Miranda started receiving death threats. That, Raven said, was different. “When she started getting death threats, I was like, ‘You can literally not do anything.’”
Miranda then dropped another bombshell, explaining the origin of those death threats.
“Can I just tell you why I was getting death threats? The whole thing started because I was asked on Keke Palmer‘s podcast, by Keke, if I’d ever watched, if I watched ‘That’s So Raven‘ growing up as a kid.” Her honest reply? “No, I didn’t actually. I’ve seen all of it since we’ve been together. I love it. I think the show is fantastic, but I didn’t watch it growing up.” And just like that, the internet went wild.
Raven, ever the pragmatist, explained her approach:
“And the internet world went crazy. And so I’m used to dissociating and putting it away because you’re not who I speak to at Starbucks. And if you are, I dare you to say something to my face.” She emphasized that she comes from a generation where comments don’t dictate popularity or success. For her, what truly matters is if “these suits on the 21st floor hire me and I do my job. That’s what matters.” She shared how she’s taught Miranda this mindset: “Did that prevent you from having these five pitch meetings and selling a show?’ ‘Did that comment change anything in your life other than your mental state? Because you read it and you think that someone’s coming after you.’”
Miranda chuckled, recalling Raven’s very practical questions: “She said, ‘Did the Amazon packages stop being delivered?’ ‘Did it stop?’ I was like, ‘No, that’s true’.”
Raven firmly believes engaging with online hate is a losing game.
“You can’t do it. It’s another part of the game that we don’t have to play. That gives them a chance to interact. And if you allow those comments to interact with you, you’re not being your best self. That’s another form of bullying, but those people get excitement from it. So, I’m from the mindset, and I told her, I was like, ‘The more haters you have, the more clout you have.’ Let them hate, I don’t care. But it’s about how you interact with that hate that matters.”
The couple even faced a wild AI-generated lie. Miranda recalled one of the craziest things she’d seen: a TikTok news report claiming they had a public fight in a restaurant. The fake quote read: “Raven-Symoné storms out of restaurant and yells to wife, ‘Stop talking to me that way, I’m not your slave.’” The video went on to describe Miranda yelling at Raven and Raven throwing a glass of water—a fight that never happened at a restaurant they’d never visited.
Raven pointed out, “But again, that’s the AI-generated content because hate brings eyes. It brings clicks.” It’s a clear reminder that not everything you see online is real.
