NYC Mayor Mamdani & Charles Blow – The Root
Under the soaring ceiling of the Governor's Room, the city's youngest mayor in more than a century and its first Democratic Socialist responded to questions on issues important to African Americans. The 34-year-old was characteristically charming but deftly evasive. He discussed his African origins and why his parents gave him the middle name Kwame. Born in Uganda, he moved to South Africa at five and to the United States at seven. He addressed the shrinking Black population, gentrification of historically Black neighborhoods, school segregation, reparations, and his relationship with Donald Trump. His consistent theme was that his economic agenda focused on childcare, transportation, housing, and affordability was fundamental to improving New Yorkers' lives.

Designer Sophia Webster shared how she hunted down a rare pair of Clementine Heels for stylist Law Roach to style Zendaya. After searching her archives and considering various options, Webster turned to Instagram, where a Black woman named Yvette from Maryland had the exact tan shade and size needed. Yvette happily lent the decade-old shoes, which were shipped to London. When Zendaya wore them, both women were thrilled, with Yvette calling it the most amazing moment ever.
