You see it in our big cities and small rural towns, in neighborhood block parties and family cookouts, in the faces watching fireworks displays. But while we celebrate this year, there is an undertone of struggle. The skyrocketing cost of gas has caused many to cancel family road trips. Energy costs are up 21%, making air conditioning unaffordable during hot July. Trump's inflation has made hamburgers and hot dogs so expensive that cookouts may not happen. Our families are struggling when we should be celebrating because leaders have created an unnecessary affordability crisis.

James Harden Faces Misdemeanor Weapon Charge
James Harden was arrested in Houston early Saturday after authorities said a handgun was seen on the seat of a car he owns. The Cleveland Cavaliers guard, 36, was taken into custody at 3:41 a.m. CT on June 13 and charged with misdemeanor unlawful carrying of a weapon.

Books by writers of color have been under attack by conservative activists who want to remove their works from libraries and schools around the country. Iowa is second only to Florida, with more than 3,000 titles by writers including Maya Angelou, Toni Morrison and Angie Thomas removed under a 2023 state law. Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones is working to ensure students in her home state have access to books that tell Black stories through community initiatives.

Beyoncé and Jay-Z’s East Hampton Home Gate Incident
A 63-year-old motorist drove his car at high speed up the driveway of Beyoncé and Jay-Z's East Hampton mansion, crashing through the front gates and causing significant damage. Officers say he didn't brake when approaching the mechanical gates. His car was impounded and he was arrested, then taken to Stoney Brook Hospital. Detective Jennifer Dunn said the man seemed confused and may have been experiencing a medical issue. He was charged with felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor criminal trespass.
