Diabetes Effects on Teeth and Gums

The mouth is a gateway to the body, and for people with type 2 diabetes, oral care goes far beyond brushing and flossing. Gum disease can inflame tissues around teeth and link to uncontrolled diabetes and high blood pressure. Diabetes makes it harder to fight infection, leaving gums vulnerable. When bacteria and inflammation enter the bloodstream through gum disease, it becomes harder to control blood sugar levels. Treating gum disease can improve blood sugar control. Black Americans face disproportionate risks, being more likely to have diabetes and die from complications. Proper brushing techniques, regular flossing, water flossers, and dental checkups every six months are essential preventive measures for managing oral health with diabetes.
