Two white men in Mississippi were arrested and charged after a Black man told police that they chased him down and shot at him while he was delivering packages for FedEx.

According to the Mississippi Free Press, on Jan 24, D’Monterrio Gibson, 24, said he was delivering packages in Brookhaven, Miss. when he saw a white pickup truck driving towards him. Gibson said as the truck approached he assumed the driver was leaving until it drove towards him and tried to block his delivery vehicle. He says as he tried to flee from the pick up truck a man standing in the road shot at him. The bullets missed him but were embedded in his delivery vehicle.Β

β€œIn my mind, I’m thinking (the driver) is leaving to go to the store or something like that, but then they get extremely close to me and start blowing their horn,” Gibson told the Mississippi Free Press. β€œI proceed to leave the driveway. As I’m leaving the driveway, he starts driving in the grass trying to cut me off. My instincts kick in, I swerve around him, and I start hitting the gas trying to get out of the neighborhood because I don’t know what his intentions are.”

β€œI drive down about two or three houses. There’s another guy standing in the middle of the street pointing a gun at my windows and signaling to me to stop with his hands, as well as mouthing the word, β€˜Stop.’ I shake my head no, I hide behind the steering wheel, and I swerve around him as well. As I swerve around him, he starts firing shots into my vehicle.”

Gibson said he lost the duo when he reached the interstate highway.

He said the police did not take him seriously when he initially attempted to report the incident, telling him they had received a report of a β€œsuspicious person” at the address he was at.

β€œI reached dispatch and let him know what was going on, and I only had a chance to get a little of the story out when he cut me off and he was like, β€˜Were you at this address?’ I said β€˜yes’.”

β€œHe was like, well I just got a call of a suspicious person at this address. I was like, β€˜Sir, I’m not a suspicious person, I work for FedEx. I was just doing my job.’”

According to the Clarion-Ledger, both men turned themselves in last week. Gregory Case was identified as the man who drove the truck and his son Brandon Case was identified as the shooter. They were arrested, charged and released on bond for the alleged attack. Gregory was charged with one count of conspiracy and released on $75,000 bond. Brandon was charged with shooting into a motor vehicle and released on $150,000 bond.Β

Gibson’s attorney, Carlos Moore, says he wants both men charged with attempted murder, saying the men’s actions were reminiscent of those of Gregory and Travis McMichael, the father son duo who chased down and murdered Ahmaud Arbery.

β€œIt’s just sad that it happens. It seems to be a copycat duo copying off the Ahmaud Arbery case,” Moore told The Mississippi Free Press. β€œThey saw this man was a Black man, and they just hauled off and shot at him multiple times, at least the younger son did. The older guy tried to entrap him. They were working concertedly to try to entrap and kill this man. I mean, they shot at him several times. It’s amazing that he survived.”

Police Chief Kenny Collins, who is Black, does not want to blame racism for the actions of the Cases. He told The Daily Leader that β€œBrookhaven is not a racist, prejudiced town. You can’t judge a town by the actions of two individuals.”
