Well, it looks like Shannon Sharpe is no longer a familiar face on ESPN. Word on the street is that the network and the Pro Football Hall of Famer parted ways, and it all went down less than two weeks after he settled a sexual assault lawsuit. BlkCosmo Sports confirmed the news, and according to The Athletic, ESPN made the decision to cut ties. This comes after Sharpe had been noticeably absent from the airwaves since a woman accused him of sexual assault back in April.
Shannon Sharpe, 57, had become a regular on ESPN’s “First Take” after leaving FS1 in 2023. Throughout the allegations, he maintained his innocence, denying the claims and stating the relationship was consensual, even accusing the accuser of attempting a “shakedown.” The lawsuit has since been settled for an undisclosed amount. The accuser’s attorney, Tony Buzbee, released a statement saying, “All matters have now been addressed satisfactorily, and the matter is closed. The lawsuit will thus be dismissed with prejudice.”
Before making his mark in broadcasting, Sharpe was a dominant force on the NFL field for 14 seasons, primarily with the Denver Broncos. He became a heavyweight in sports media as Skip Bayless’ co-host on FS1’s “Undisputed” before his move to ESPN. Even with his ESPN tenure concluded, Shannon Sharpe continues to be a significant presence, running his own podcast network and producing popular digital content. In other news that’s got folks talking, former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, known for his electrifying moves on the court, is now in the headlines for a different reason. The 43-year-old was reportedly arrested in Southern California, accused of orchestrating an illegal gambling operation out of his Encino mansion. Federal prosecutors allege that Arenas, along with five others, hosted high-stakes card games at the property between September 2021 and July 2022. The operation was apparently quite the setup, offering a full-service experience with chefs, valets, security, and even women hired to serve the gamblers. The group allegedly profited by taking a rake from each pot. Arenas is facing charges of conspiracy to operate an illegal gambling business and operating an illegal gambling business, with each carrying a potential five-year prison sentence, plus charges of making false statements to federal investigators. It’s been a whirlwind year, and these stories remind us how much is always unfolding in our communities.
