Black Men’s Style Guide to Level Up Your Look

Finding your style shouldn’t feel like a guessing game. Thanks to the wealth of men’s fashion creators sharing real advice across social media, the path to looking sharp has never been clearer. Whether you’re looking to refine your wardrobe or understand what actually works with your build, there’s a creator out there breaking down the fundamentals. With New York Fashion Week in full swing, it’s the perfect moment to tap into these insights and level up your entire approach to getting dressed.

Men’s fashion creators are generous with their knowledge, offering everything from grooming routines to practical tips on building a cohesive closet. The consensus among them is surprisingly straightforward: good style isn’t about owning more—it’s about owning smarter.

Personal Style Needs Alignment

The biggest mistake men make isn’t about following the wrong trends. It’s not having a clear direction to begin with. Fashion creator Cartier Butler nails this in his approach: “You don’t have a style problem; you have an alignment problem.”

What does that mean? Start by figuring out what you actually like. Not what looks good on your favorite influencer or what your friends are wearing. Butler encourages men to explore jewelry, silhouettes, brands, and fits until something clicks. This exploration matters because building your personal style requires knowing your body. Learn your sizes across different brands. Understand how you want your shirts to drape, where your pants should sit, how your shoes should complement the rest of your outfit.

The process takes time. Butler’s advice is worth remembering: “Give yourself space and give yourself grace to step into who you are.”

Build With The Basics

Once you know your direction, resist the urge to go overboard. Creator Ryan Adams breaks down the real problem: “You are not building a wardrobe; you are buying outfits.”

The fix is simple. Start with solid basics: quality t-shirts, oxford shirts, well-fitting denim, a reliable shoe rotation, and a few accessories you actually wear. These pieces become your foundation. They work together. They’re versatile. Most importantly, they don’t require complicated mental math every time you get dressed.

Fit Is Everything

Everything falls apart if the fit is wrong. Plus-size model and fashion influencer Cameron Boyland sees this constantly: men in clothes that don’t actually work for their bodies. “Every man has a different body composition, shape and proportions, so fit makes all the difference,” Boyland explains. This is especially true for suits, where poor tailoring can completely sabotage an otherwise solid look.

Here’s the thing: proper fit makes affordable clothes look expensive. It creates the right silhouette. It changes how you carry yourself. Before you commit to any piece, spend time in front of the mirror. See how it feels. See how it looks.

Don’t Be Afraid to Be Bold

Your foundation should be neutral basics, but that doesn’t mean playing it safe forever. Adding color and pattern gives your outfit personality. It signals something about who you are.

Boyland’s perspective on this is worth considering: “The style should reflect who you are. I have a big, bold personality, so my clothing reflects how I want to express myself and how I want people to approach me or notice me.”

Your confidence in what you’re wearing matters more than the rules. Experiment. Try pieces that push you slightly outside your comfort zone. The best outfit is always the one that makes you feel like yourself.

Make Grooming Sexy Again

Style extends beyond what’s in your closet. A fresh haircut, clean skin, and well-maintained facial hair complete the picture. Yet many men skip the grooming part entirely. Darrell Spencer, CEO of Crowned Skin, thinks the solution starts with conversation. “I think it just simply starts with having conversations. ‘Hey, what are you doing for facial care? Do you have this? What’s your favorite cologne?’ I think slowly, but surely, it becomes that much easier to talk about.”

Spencer’s skincare philosophy is refreshingly uncomplicated. You need a facial cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. Use them morning and night. That’s it. Healthy skin is the best accessory you can wear.

Accessories Are Always Necessary

With the fit and grooming locked in, accessories are what tie everything together. A quality timepiece, a few rings, or a pair of standout sunglasses can completely elevate a basic outfit. Fashion creator Christopher Lovehall puts it plainly: “A lot of people shy away from accessories, not understanding how much character accessories bring to your outfit.”

A simple t-shirt becomes interesting when you add the right pieces. Accessories are where personality lives. Don’t skip them. And before you walk out the door, a spritz of cologne is the final touch.
