Out-Of-Wedlock Births Are Rising β¦ And The Government Just Dropped Stats On Which Couples Are Most Likely To Have Kids Inside Marriage
Itβs no secret that out-of-wedlock births have been on the rise in the United States. What used to be the exception is now almost the norm, with nearly half of all children born today arriving outside of a traditional marriage. And now the government just released fresh numbers from the CDCβs official birth records β not surveys, not guesses, but actual data straight off birth certificates β and the stats give us a peek at which types of couples are most likely to raise kids inside of marriage β¦ and which arenβt.
The results are sparking conversation everywhere because they highlight sharp differences across racial lines, especially when you break it down by the race of the mother and the father.
Hereβs the data from the CDC website:
White mother + Black father:Β 60%
White mother + Asian father:Β 16%

Black mother + Black father:Β 59%

Black mother + White father:Β 38%

Black mother + Asian father:Β 34%

Asian mother + Asian father:Β 7%

Asian mother + White father:Β 9%

Asian mother + Black father:Β 37%

White mother + White father:Β 19%

White Couples vs Interracial Pairs
When both parents are White, the non-marital birth rate isΒ 19%. That means about 1 in 5 White-White couples have children outside of marriage.
But once you look at interracial relationships, the numbers shift. White women who have children with Black men see a whoppingΒ 60% out-of-wedlock rate. By contrast, White women who have children with Asian men have the lowest rates in their group β justΒ 16%Β of those births happen outside of marriage.
So depending on whoβs the father, White mothersβ likelihood of having kids outside of marriage nearly triples.
Black Families Show Similar Patterns
For Black mothers with Black fathers, the rate isΒ 59%Β β very close to the Black father/White mother pairing. But things look different when Black women have children with other groups.
With White fathers, the number drops toΒ 38%, and with Asian fathers it goes even lower βΒ 34%.
So while more than half of Black-Black births happen outside of marriage, the rate for Black mothers partnered with non-Black men is significantly lower.

Asian Couples Are The Exception
Among Asian families, the numbers are dramatically different. Asian mothers with Asian fathers have the lowest non-marital birth rate of all β justΒ 7%. Thatβs practically unheard of in modern America, where out-of-wedlock births are climbing everywhere else.
Even when Asian mothers partner outside of their race, the rates stay low compared to other groups. With White men, itβs justΒ 9%, and with Black men itβs higher βΒ 37%Β β but still far below the levels seen in most other pairings.

What It All Means
The CDC numbers donβt explainΒ whyΒ the differences exist β they simply track what mothers put on the birth certificate when their baby is born. But the patterns are clear:
- Asian couples are the most likely to marry before having kids.
- Black couples are the least likely, with nearly 6 in 10 births outside of marriage.
- Interracial couples fall in the middle, but the fatherβs race makes a huge difference.
Sociologists and family researchers will argue over whatβs driving these numbers β economics, culture, education, or just personal choice β but the government data paints a picture that canβt be ignored.
The Bottom Line
Out-of-wedlock births are reshaping the modern American family, and these new stats show itβs not happening evenly across communities. From the very low rates among Asian families to the much higher levels among Black couples and certain interracial pairings, the data gives us a raw, unfiltered look at how race and marriage intersect in todayβs United States.
One thing is certain: whether inside or outside of marriage, these are the babies shaping the next generation.
