Ciara Talks Grammys Snubs, Says “Body Party” Should’ve At Least Been Nominated: ‘I Literally Checked Off Every Box’

Ms. Ciara is out here dropping gems, sharing how she felt truly “overlooked” and even a little snubbed by the Grammys for her 2013 hit, “Body Party.” She’s not wrong; that song was everywhere, and in her words, it “literally checked off every box.”

For the record, Ciara is no stranger to Grammy recognition. She's racked up five nominations and even took home an award in 2006 for "Best Short Form Music Video" for her undeniable banger "Lose Control," featuring the legendary Missy Elliott and the late, great Fatman Scoop. Her last nod before this was for "Love Sex Magic," her 2009 collab with Justin Timberlake, which competed for "Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals."

This revelation came during her appearance on *The Zeze Millz Show* on December 28th. Ciara, who just dropped her eighth album, *CICi*, back in August, got real about those Grammy snubs. She recalled a conversation where she was asked if she ever felt overlooked.

“Are there moments when you feel like somebody overlooked you? I was just talking to someone the other day — this is a conversation I will not go too heavy on it — but I was talking about the Grammys situation. I literally had a song that was R&B that went Number One on the charts, right? And this song was prominent in Urban Pop Culture. I’m talking about “Body Party,” okay? It was a really big record.

That was — that could be a great example where you’re like, ‘Okay, I literally checked off every box.’ You know, that’s dream goals, right? And it’s a blessing when you get to check off all the boxes on a record release. In that moment, say you don’t get a Grammy nomination — not even a nomination — you’re like, ‘Wait, what?’ Like, help me understand what more do I have to do?

So, you have those natural momentS where things like that happen. What I was saying back to that is: I never want to feel like the validation of my success is within any tool, anything physical or material. It’s like you have to have like your own success meter in your mind. And as long as I’m doing what I love, it’s making me happy, and I have a strong connection to my fans, [that] means the world to me. I have a strong love for this thing. The moment I lose the love for this is the moment that I”ll stop doing it. But, I just decided I don’t want to put too much weight or merit on things that I can’t control.”

During the interview, host Zeze Millz confessed "Body Party" was a personal favorite. Zeze then dropped the bombshell: the song was ineligible for a Grammy nod because it sampled Ghost Town DJs. This isn't new news, though.

Back in December 2013, Ciara herself clarified the situation on Instagram. She explained that sampling Ghost Town DJs’ "My Boo" was the very reason "Body Party" couldn't be nominated. Thankfully, The Recording Academy eventually lifted this sample restriction, but it was too late for her bop. At the time, she posted:

“Body Party Going number 1 this year was a blessing within itself, and for that I am thankful! Unfortunately it couldn’t be eligible because of the -My Boo- sample in it. I discovered this before the songs allowed for nominations were set… However this year has been incredible considering the journey a few years prior, and it is JUST the beginning:) So, I’za Happy Happy Girl, and Thankful to have a Grammy already!!:) Let’s keep all this good stuff going! Love CC! Xx!”

Even then, Ciara kept her head high, focusing on her success and existing Grammy win.
