Donald Trump Administration Ends Somalia’s Temporary Protected Status, DHS Encourages Self-Deportation Before March 17 ‘Or Receive A Visit From ICE’

Y’all, the news just dropped, and it’s hitting our communities hard. The Donald Trump administration has officially pulled the plug on Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia. This means thousands of Somalian immigrants who’ve been living and working in the U.S. legally, often for years, are now facing the threat of deportation. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is even out here encouraging “self-deportation” by March 17th, with a chilling warning of an ICE visit if they don’t comply. For those who don’t know, TPS is a lifeline, allowing people from countries ravaged by war, famine, or natural disasters to find safety here in America without fear of being sent back to unsafe conditions.

This isn’t an isolated incident either. We saw this playbook run back in November 2025 when the Donald Trump administration also ended TPS for Haiti. That decision put over 350,000 Haitian migrants on a countdown to lose their legal status by early 2026. It’s a pattern that shows a clear stance against protections for vulnerable populations.

The DHS made it official on Tuesday, January 13, confirming that Somalia’s TPS status would officially end on March 17, 2026. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem delivered the news, echoing the sentiment that “temporary means temporary.” She claimed that conditions in Somalia have improved enough that the country no longer meets the criteria for TPS. Noem even went as far as to say that allowing Somali nationals to stay goes against “our national interests,” declaring, “We are putting Americans first.” You know the drill, that coded language always rings familiar.

Department of Homeland Security Tells Somali Nationals To Self-Deport Before March 17 Or Else After Donald Trump Ends Temporary Protected Status

DHS further clarified the process, stating that before a TPS designation expires, the Secretary of Homeland Security must review the conditions. But with this administration, the writing has been on the wall. The March 17, 2026, expiration date is firm.

Here’s where it gets truly wild: DHS is actually *encouraging* Somalians with TPS to “self-deport.” They’ve even pushed a mobile app, the CBP Home app, to facilitate this. And get this — if you self-deport, they’re offering a “complimentary plane ticket” and a “$1,000 exit bonus.” A thousand dollars to leave the life you’ve built here, with a vague promise of “potential future legal immigration.” It sounds less like a humanitarian offer and more like a push to clear the decks.

This harsh policy isn’t coming out of nowhere. It follows recent, deeply offensive comments from President Trump himself. During a Cabinet meeting last month in Pennsylvania, he stooped to calling Somali immigrants “garbage,” saying he doesn’t want them in the U.S. His exact words were a dehumanizing rant about Somalia being “filthy, dirty, disgusting, ridden with crime,” with the only “good” thing being “going after ships.” The rhetoric speaks volumes, and now, we see it manifesting in policy.

ABC News reports that nearly 3,000 Somali nationals are now staring down deportation thanks to this revocation. As of this past Tuesday, 2,471 individuals were under TPS, with another 1,383 having pending applications. And let’s not forget, there are almost 260,000 Americans of Somali descent here as of 2024. These aren’t just numbers; these are families, neighbors, and vital members of our communities.

In response to this devastating news, the Minneapolis Delegation of the Minnesota House of Representatives didn’t hold back. They issued a powerful statement, calling out this move as a “significant departure from decades of bipartisan humanitarian policy.” They highlighted how these decisions place “long-standing Minnesota residents—who have lived, worked, and raised families here legally—at immediate risk of losing their lawful status and being forced into uncertainty.” Their message is clear: ending these protections doesn’t magically fix conditions abroad. Instead, it “creates fear, disrupts families, and destabilizes communities here at home.”

They affirmed their solidarity and opposition:

“The termination of Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals and other impacted communities represents a significant departure from decades of bipartisan humanitarian policy. These decisions place long-standing Minnesota residents—who have lived, worked, and raised families here legally—at immediate risk of losing their lawful status and being forced into uncertainty.

TPS exists because conditions in designated countries meet clear statutory standards related to conflict and instability. Ending these protections does not change the realities on the ground abroad, but it does create fear, disrupt families, and destabilize communities here at home.

As the Minneapolis Delegation, we stand with Somali Minnesotans and with all communities impacted by the termination of TPS. We oppose immigration policies that separate families, undermine community stability, and erode public trust.

Immigrant and refugee communities are an essential part of Minneapolis and Minnesota. They are our neighbors, coworkers, healthcare workers, educators, small-business owners, and civic leaders. Our state is stronger because of their contributions, and we will continue to advocate for policies that protect the safety, dignity, and stability of every community impacted by these decisions.”

This strong stand reminds us that immigrant and refugee communities are the backbone of our society—our neighbors, coworkers, and leaders. Their contributions strengthen our state, and protecting their dignity and stability is paramount.
