Black Celebrities With Large Families

Ciara and Russell Wilson announced a new addition to their family over Labor Day weekend, sharing the news via Instagram. Five kids might sound like a roster these days, but Hollywood has plenty of examples of large, loving Black families thriving together. The couple’s announcement sparked predictable online commentary, but what matters here is simple: two parents who love each other building a nurturing home for their children. That’s a celebration of Black love, full stop.

Anyone suggesting otherwise deserves scrutiny through the lens of misogynoir. But that conversation can wait. What’s worth exploring now is how Ciara and Russell Wilson fit into a broader gallery of Black celebrity families doing the work—co-parenting, blending households, and raising kids in the public eye with intention and grace.

Their fifth child will join Future, 12; Sienna, 9; Win, 6; and Amora, 2. In a follow-up video, they surprised their kids with the news—a moment captured with genuine excitement and plenty of screams. The way their children reacted said everything about the environment they’re creating together.

Most people know about John David Washington, their oldest at 42. But he has three siblings: Katia, 39, a producer; and twins Olivia and Malcolm, 35, who work as an actress and film director. The family recently collaborated on Netflix’s “The Piano Lesson,” showing that big families in Hollywood don’t just exist—they create together.

Steve brought four children into his relationship with Marjorie: twins Brandi and Karli, 43, and sons Broderick, 35, and Wynton, 29. Marjorie came with three of her own: Morgan, 41, Lori, 29, and Jason, 35. Blended families require real work, real communication, and a commitment to making space for everyone. The Harveys have become something of a blueprint for how to do it publicly.

They even gave us a glimpse into their world with the 2016 reality show “For Peete’s Sake.” What struck people wasn’t just the size of their family—it was the genuine love and humor holding it all together.
