Florida authorities recently made an arrest in the chilling murder of British woman Sonia Exelby. What makes this case even more disturbing is the allegation that Exelby traveled to the U.S. seeking a pre-arranged sexual assault and murder after connecting with her suspected killer online.
According to PEOPLE, Exelby was first reported missing on October 13 when she didn’t board her flight back to the U.K. Her remains were tragically discovered days later in Marion Oaks, with investigators quickly ruling her death a homicide. Police confirmed that Exelby and her alleged killer had met online, concocting a deeply disturbing plan leading up to her death.
This past November 17, officials from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office apprehended 53-year-old Dwain Hall in connection with Exelby’s murder. This arrest brings a name to the tragic story, with the suspect now facing serious charges.
A Disturbing Plan: Victim Sought “Sexual Abuse, Torture, and Possible Murder”
Investigators uncovered heartbreaking details from Exelby’s computer. Writings revealed she was suicidal and had meticulously planned her trip to the U.S. with the sole intention of being harmed. She explicitly stated her desire to be “sexually abused, tortured, and possibly murdered.”
An arrest affidavit further indicated that Exelby had reached out to several individuals across the U.S., seeking assistance with this grim plan. Authorities also found a suicide letter, where she expressed a chilling sense of hopefulness should her plan succeed.
Financial Activity and Conflicting Stories Point to Suspect
The trail to Dwain Hall began with suspicious financial activity. Investigators found attempts to transfer money from Exelby’s bank account multiple times starting October 11. When first questioned, Hall denied any knowledge of Exelby. However, he later confessed to having multiple sexual encounters with her.
During his voluntary police interview, Hall’s story shifted. He initially claimed ignorance of Exelby but then admitted they had sex multiple times. He also told investigators they discussed her desire to die and be killed. Chillingly, he allegedly stated that if he were to help her, he “would’ve taken her to Alligator Alley to dispose her remains.”
Even with mounting evidence, Hall has not confessed to the murder. Instead, he made a cold and disturbing remark about Exelby’s death, stating that “she’s happy now because she got what she wanted.”
A Desperate Plea: Exelby Tried to Back Out
The affidavit brought to light an even more harrowing detail: Exelby had second thoughts. Before her death, she messaged a friend on Discord, indicating she was being held against her will.
In what may have been one of her final messages, Exelby expressed being trapped and terrified for her life. She wrote, “He made it clear there was no way out unless I shoot him. I was questioning it last night. I can’t kill anyone.” This suggests a tragic attempt to escape a horrifying situation.
Dwain Hall Faces Murder and Kidnapping Charges
Following his arrest, Dwain Hall was formally charged with both murder and kidnapping. Authorities confirm the investigation is still active and ongoing.
Officials are meticulously examining forensic evidence and digital records to ascertain the exact cause of Exelby’s death and to determine if any other individuals were involved. Hall remains in custody without bond.
