The music world recently felt a deep loss with the passing of R&B artist D’Angelo. On October 14, 2025, his family shared that he succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 51.

In a statement, his family expressed their sorrow: “The shining star of our family has dimmed his light for us in this life. After a prolonged and courageous battle with cancer, we are heartbroken to announce that Michael D’Angelo Archer, known to his fans around the world as D’Angelo, has been called home…We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinarily moving music he leaves behind.” It’s a tough moment, but his music will live on.

D’Angelo leaves behind three children: Michael Archer Jr., Imani Archer, and Morocco Archer. They’ve each shared touching tributes to their father, with his daughter, Imani, giving a particularly emotional interview about the loss of her legendary dad. Black excellence runs deep in that family.

Let’s dive deeper into the life of D’Angelo’s only daughter.

Born in Los Angeles, Imani spent her formative years on the East Coast before moving to Florida. Carrying on the family torch, Imani is also a singer and songwriter, passionate about all forms of art. Like father, like daughter!

As she shared with Shoutout LA, “I have always been into the arts! I loved to draw and write books when I was a child until I was 7! At that age, I heard a Keshia Cole song on the radio, and that was it for me! From then on, I knew music was what I wanted to do! I started writing real songs around 16 and just kept practicing every day!”

Imani’s got some bangers out there, including “If Words Could Kill,” “Crocodile Tears,” and “Deadly is Denial.” You can definitely hear that Archer magic in her music.

D’Angelo’s daughter recently shared some memories about her father

In a recent interview with BET.com, Imani gave us a glimpse into the beautiful relationship she shared with her dad.

“We would play and sing together all the time,” she fondly remembered. “I remember I was in the car, and I was singing something. Me and him both do this thing where we won’t sing the song as it is. We’ll sing it in harmony. I remember that was one of the first times he was like, ‘What? You know how to do that? I didn’t know you could do that! That’s what I do!’ and I was like, ‘Really? I didn’t know you did that too!’” Black folks and that harmony, you know how it goes!

“It definitely runs in the Archer genes…my brothers, they’re both gifted as well. It’s for sure an Archer thing. He was obviously the king of it. He was just so effortlessly talented; he didn’t even have to try.” Talent is definitely in the bloodline!

Imani shared, “He would always try to give me pointers with this thing called bar chords because I struggle. He would always try to hold my hand and be like, ‘You gotta do it like this.’ He would try to teach me how to do riffs and all these really cool guitar tricks. He inspired me in so many ways.”

“Sometimes, I would show him my songs on the piano, and he would jump in on guitar and improvise. He was such a dope musician…He really cared about the people he loved and was a protector.” D’Angelo’s legacy lives on, not just through his music but also through the love and inspiration he gave his family.
