From Locs to a Full Afro

The conversation began in May, when the hip-hop icon surprised fans at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia with a full afro in place of his longtime locs. The look quickly sparked online speculation, but the new footage shows the time and care involved in the process. According to Beyoncé, it took six days to safely remove the locs, followed by an additional day of detangling and trimming. The clip also shows her blow-drying and shaping his hair, underscoring the patience required to achieve the final style.

A Personal and Family Story

Beyond the style change, the transformation carries deeper meaning. Beyoncé shared that the afro was a tribute to Jay-Z’s late father, who once wore the same style and had a strong connection to Philadelphia. She also explained that Jay-Z grew his locs for their daughter, Blue Ivy, after noticing she was still learning to feel confident in her natural hair texture. The gesture was meant to show her that her hair should always be embraced and celebrated.

“Our daughter was about five, and she wasn’t feeling very confident in her hair at that time,” Beyoncé said. “When she told her father that, it inspired Jay to grow out his hair. We really wanted her to embrace every inch of her gorgeous curls.”

The moment adds another layer to a family legacy that has long centered Black beauty, self-expression, and hair pride. Beyoncé’s message reframes the conversation around Jay-Z’s transformation, turning it from a viral spectacle into a story about heritage, care, and representation.
