Mattel is expanding its entertainment universe with a live-action television adaptation of Shani, Variety exclusively reports. The beloved 1990s fashion doll line was originally created to better represent Black girls. Emmy-winning writer and producer Janine Nabers (Swarm, Watchmen, Atlanta) has been tapped as the series’ showrunner, marking a major step forward in Mattel’s growing commitment to inclusive storytelling.
The Shani line, first launched in 1991, was a groundbreaking moment for Mattel. Designed with input from Black artists and toy designers, The Marvelous World of Shani featured three main dolls: Shani, Asha, and Nichelle. Each reflecting diverse skin tones, hairstyles, and fashions inspired by Black culture. The line became a cultural touchstone for many young Black girls who rarely saw themselves authentically represented on toy shelves. Though it was eventually absorbed into the Barbie franchise, Shani’s legacy has endured as a symbol of empowerment and visibility.
The new series aims to reimagine Shani for modern audiences, blending her legacy with contemporary themes of identity, sisterhood, and ambition. Sources close to the project describe it as a “family dramedy centered around the aspirational character of Shani.” Mattel has teamed with Amazon MGM Studios to develop a live-action series.
Nabers’ involvement signals an ambitious creative vision. Known for her sharp storytelling and nuanced portrayals of Black womanhood, Nabers co-created Amazon Prime’s Swarm with Donald Glover and has written for acclaimed shows such as Watchmen and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce. Her appointment underscores Mattel’s intention to craft a story that is both culturally resonant and emotionally grounded. It’s about time!
This announcement follows the success of Mattel’s Barbie cinematic universe, which reignited interest in the company’s vast intellectual property catalog. With Shani, Mattel appears eager to continue expanding representation within its storytelling universe, giving voice to a generation that grew up yearning for more inclusive heroes.
No casting or release date has been announced yet, but excitement is already building among fans and cultural critics alike. Many see Shani’s live-action debut as not just a nostalgic revival, but a timely response to the growing demand for Black-led narratives in mainstream media. We’re ready for it!
With Janine Nabers at the helm, the upcoming Shani series has the potential to blend nostalgia, innovation, and social impact, as well as continuing Mattel’s evolution from toy manufacturer to a storytelling powerhouse.
