Ne-Yo opened up about his past marriage and how he’s choosing a different path today.

After his marriage to Crystal Renay ended in 2023, Ne-Yo entered into a polyamorous relationship with multiple partners. He’s been real about the journey—admitting that he made serious mistakes during his time with Renay, but he’s also shared that polyamory has served him better than monogamy ever did. The R&B artist is leaning into Ne-Yo‘s philosophy of complete honesty moving forward.

Ne-Yo admitted he made mistakes during his marriage

Ne-Yo married Renay in 2016. By 2022, she filed for divorce, citing infidelity as the breaking point. He didn’t shy away from owning his role in what went wrong.

“I’mma keep it a buck with you. I was married before this, to one woman,” he told streamer Kai Cenat (via People). “Things didn’t go well. I made my mistakes. We got divorced, a lot of people got hurt in the process, and I told myself at that moment I ain’t lying to nobody about nothing ever again.”

He feels that polyamory suits him better than the traditional relationship structure. He also emphasized that he now demands a policy of complete honesty with all his partners—something Renay said he failed to do during their marriage.

“8 years. 8 years of lies and deception,” Renay wrote in a post (per People), adding, “8 years of unknowingly sharing my life and my husband with numerous women who sell their bodies to him unprotected…every last one of them!”

She made it clear that his infidelity caused real damage to her emotionally and spiritually.

“To say I’m heartbroken and disgusted is a[n] understatement,” she added. “To ask me to stay and accept it is absolutely insane. The mentality of a narcissist. I will no longer lie to the public or pretend that this is something it isn’t. I choose me, I choose my happiness and health and my respect.”
