Trump built a significant portion of his early political traction on the birther lie. He demanded to see Barack Obama’s birth certificate. He routinely questioned the intelligence, legitimacy, and humanity of the Obamas. That history is not disconnected from his current social media habits. It is the foundation of them.
By bringing up the deleted Jesus image alongside the Obama caricatures, the rapper forces his audience to look at the rules of engagement. He exposes the selective morality of the political right. They will draw a line at blasphemy, but they will gladly cross the line of basic human respect when the targets are Black.
His voice holds weight right now because the culture trusts him. He is not auditioning for a spot on a cable news panel. He is not trying to secure a book deal. He is simply holding a mirror up to a fractured political system and laughing at the absurdity of it all. He understands that politics is often just pop culture with higher stakes.
