Reverend Al Sharpton Calls for Fair Jury in A$AP Rocky’s Firearm Trial

Reverend Al Sharpton has raised concerns about potential jury bias in A$AP Rocky’s firearm trial, citing a lack of diversity in the jury pool. Sharpton highlighted systemic flaws in the selection process, pointing out that only 4 out of 106 potential jurors in Los Angeles are Black, with none included among the first 30 candidates.

“When we have four Black people in the city of Los Angeles out of one hundred and six — and exactly zero within the first thirty possible candidates for the jury — something appears to be very wrong with the system,” Sharpton tweeted on Wednesday. The reverend, alongside the National Action Network, emphasized the constitutional right to a fair and representative jury.

Rocky faces serious charges stemming from a November 2021 incident where he allegedly shot his former friend, ASAP Relli, during an argument in Hollywood. Despite video evidence capturing part of the altercation, Rocky refused a plea deal that included 180 days in jail, three years of probation, and a seven-year suspended prison sentence, opting instead to go to trial.

Sharpton stressed that, regardless of the facts of the case, Rocky deserves a fair trial. “I do not know the particulars of the trial, but I do know he deserves to be judged fairly by his peers,” he said. “I am monitoring this trial and challenging [them] to ensure that fair and representative justice is afforded to A$AP Rocky.”

A$AP Rocky has not commented publicly on Sharpton’s show of support, but the reverend’s involvement underscores ongoing concerns about racial disparities in the justice system. As the trial proceeds, Sharpton and advocacy groups will continue to push for accountability in the jury selection process.
