BlkCosmo Blerds got cozy with the cast of Sarah’s Oil – Sonequa Martin-Green, Mel Rodriguez, and Kenric Green – to unpack a truly inspiring story, one that deserves way more shine in American history books. The film dives into the life of Sarah Rector, a young Black girl who came up in Oklahoma Indian Territory back in the early 1900s. Her world flipped when oil was discovered on her land.

Sarah’s Oil, directed with both heart and historical accuracy, tells the real-life story of how Sarah Rector’s belief in herself shattered racial and societal ceilings. Can you imagine? At just eleven, she became one of the very first Black female millionaires in the U.S. Of course, that came with a mix of awe and folks trying to take advantage. The film really gets into her strength when faced with greed and highlights how crucial her community was in protecting what was hers.

Sonequa Martin-Green was on fire talking about bringing Sarah’s resilience and elegance to the screen, really driving home the film’s message of taking control of your own destiny. Mel Rodriguez dove deep into the tricky morals of the adults around Sarah, and Kenric Green pondered the delicate balance between shielding innocence and fighting injustice.

With knockout performances and a story rooted in truth, Sarah’s Oil isn’t just reclaiming a vital part of Black history; it’s holding up a mirror to us today, making us think about wealth, who we are, and having the power to make our own choices.

This film, made with so much care, celebrates our history and reminds us that brilliance can pop up in the most unexpected places. Sarah’s Oil hits theaters November 7th.
